I love surprises. I found this bag in my pantry yesterday. Giddapahar Imperial Muscatel, second flush ... 2017. (Gifted to me by Lochan Tea.)Yes, a Darjeeling second flush from the year of the big regional strike. Not much was produced, but I got some before production ceased in late-June of that year. So... kinda rare. . . I had no clue how well this would've "aged" in two years. Rule o' thumb: Darjeelings don't usually keep beyond a year. (Blame hard withers and clonal material, etc.) . . But this... ? . . This held up pretty well. Sure, it required a ten-second pre-wash, and about a third of the muscatel was lost to time, but it still had the depth of character. . . It isn't spring until I've had a first flush Darjeeling to muse on. This lovely is 2019 Giddapahar Spring Wonder from Lochan Tea. Giddapahar was the first Darjeeling garden I became palatially infatuated with ... still am. Floral and sweet, but not loudly astringent or annoyingly aromatic.
