New Custom Care Bear! Atlas(t) Bear
Made a new custom Care Bear today. This one is made for, and in honour of, my grandfather
My grandfather (or, “Poppa”, as we grandkids call him) is an electrical engineer, who has literally over 50 years of experience designing electrical transformers, the machines that convert the direct current produced by turbines into the alternating current it needs to be to travel through wires. I asked him what his favourite project in his career was, what he was most proud of, and he told me the story of English Electric’s Atlas transformer.
This transformer was one of the largest, if not *the* largest in the world at the time, in 1964 in South Africa. Two previous engineers had tried to get it to work, without success. Poppa gave it a go, and got it working. So his coworkers started calling it “At last”, with a “t” at the end, since the project was *finally* done. The “T” also stands for Poppa’s first initial.
He’s still so proud of this project, even though he’s designed so many different transformers since then, including some of the big ones at Niagara Falls, and he completed it before my Mom was born, never mind me! So in honour of Poppa’s long and illustrious career, and for him literally keeping a huge portion of my province’s lights on, I designed this Care Bear for Poppa. He’s made out of a Kenner 1980s 13″ Champ Bear.
His tummy symbol is the symbol used in design diagrams for an autotransformer with an iron core -- the kind of transformer “Atlas” was. I put a cursive “t” at the end of Atlas’ name in pink, to represent Poppa, since his work nickname for many years was “The Pink Panther” (that’s another story), and in honour of the great story he told me.
It was actually quite difficult to get that information. There’s nothing on Google about this transfomer (I guess not everything’s made it to the internet), and it took Poppa a while to give the specs, though I got a great story from it, so it was worth it.
His eyes are coloured silver, since Poppa has very light, blue-grey eyes, and his nose is painted a burnt orange colour that I think looks nice. The tummy symbol’s hand-embroidered, as usual.
I really hope Poppa will like him! I’ve very close to grandfather, so I want this bear to be perfect for him!

Snowdin is NOT celebrating Christmas
(undertale spoilers)
In Undertale, Snowdin has colorful lights on its welcome sign, a decorated tree, and even wrapped presents from Santa. It looks like a town that is in the midst of celebrating Christmas. However, Christmas might still only be a holiday on the surface and not what is going on in Snowdin.
Christmas
In the game, there are only two references made to Christmas.
The first reference is made by Mettaton, a well-known human fanatic. Given his love for humans, it’s likely he picked this up from the humans. Moreover, Mettaton cheekily says “Christmas came early this year,” meaning it’s not supposed to be Christmas right now, despite the fact that there are presents underneath a decorated tree in Snowdin.
The second reference is made in the Cast Roll segment, implying that Gyftrot becomes a Christmas Display. These cast roll captions are in regards to the monsters’ future after the barrier goes down, so this happens to Gyftrot presumably on the surface.
Presents-Under-the-Tree Tradition
While it does seem like the Snowdin residents are celebrating Christmas, no one mentions that the residents are celebrating any holiday. In fact, this bear explains how their presents-under-the-tree tradition came to be.
Placing gifts under a decorated tree mimics giving gifts to the monster whose tree-like horns were decorated by teens. Even Gyftrot mentions that it has heard of this local tradition.
After defeating Asriel in the pacifist route, the bear comments how the humans will “probably be weirded out by” this tradition, assuming it’s unique to the monsters.
Santa?
Yet despite the distinction between Christmas and the presents-under-the-tree-tradition, labeling the presents from Santa has been integrated into the Snowdin residents’ tradition.
Interestingly, Asgore has a Santa Claus outfit. While he may not live in Snowdin, Gerson mentioned that Asgore “loves to walk around and talk to people.” It’s possible Asgore learned of the tradition in Snowdin and Santa, or perhaps he introduced Santa to their tradition.
Conclusion
The residents of Snowdin are not celebrating Christmas, but there are parallels between Christmas and their tradition. They may have come up with different reasons for having Santa Claus, giving gifts, and putting gifts underneath a tree, but the spirit of giving is still there.
