Hey y’all.

Quick update about the GifsOnTumblr extension.

I just published an update to the extension that transforms .gifv back to .gif on both Tumblr’s dashboard and individual blogs (pretty much everywhere Tumblr GIFVs are displayed, actually). Enjoy!

Since a new gif update rolled out on Tumblr around Nov 2019, gifs over 3.9mb look HORRIBLY distorted on computers. Gifs with any added lossy now also look distorted. Making a gif 3mb and lower is a sure bet for a HQ gif on here still, but interestingly, I’ve found out that a lot of gifs between 3.1mb and 3.9mb turn out to be HQ when uploaded to Tumblr! However, the exact size it has to be in order to show up as HQ varies from gif to gif.

This is a kind of guide to demonstrate this weird phenonemon and it’s a tutorial on how I use trial and error to upload a gif in the 3mb-3.9mb range until my gif shows up as HQ. The differences between the LQ/distorted gif and the HQ gif might not look super obvious in this recording, but with your own gifs on your own drafts page, the difference should be like night and day. It ranges from a crisp HQ gif to Twitter/giphy-like quality.

I can't save your gif overlays to my computer to use either on chrome or firefox. When I try to open them in photoshop after an attempted save it says it can't parse the file. I'm just wondering what's going on?

this is because of the change in format that tumblr uses and now converts gifs to gifv which compresses the size for faster loading ( and reduces the quality :/ ) - usually for gifs over around 2mb.

‘GIFV is an alternative to the animated GIF format for presenting animated images on a web page. It is not a unique file format, but rather an approach to serving video files using the HTML

tag. It uses the H. 264 or WebM video formats, which have widespread support in modern web browsers.’

this means that when you try to ‘right click save’ a gif, it’s likely to save in a WEBP format rather than a gif format.  which means you’re going to have problems opening it in photoshop.

solution 1:

when saving your gif, right click and ‘open image in new tab’.  you’ll get the direct url of the image in your address bar which will likely end in .gifv.  just delete the letter ‘v’ off the end and hit enter to refresh the page - now right click and save the gif.  it will save in the original gif format.  

solution 2:

use a browser extension to convert gifv back to gif.  here’s a little list by elramdam.  i haven’t tried these, so don’t know how well they work!

thinkin about the sheer disregard tumblr has towards creators who keep this hellsite alive and how a lot of those creators have probably lost all motivation to make gifs forever or at least until this shit gets fixed. but also thinkin about how staff has consistently proven to be incapable of fixing anything so... u know jus some cute thoughts b4 bed

tumblr really doesn't give a shit about creators and it shows and it sucks!!! it really sucks!!!! like...editors are already facing discouragement over the annoying likes to reblogs ratios. now we have to worry about our work not being seen in its true quality which will most probably result in even LESS reblogs. i guess now editors will have to be placing a reminder tag in every gifset we post........'please view this on my blog i swear the quality isn't THIS shit puke'. god tumblr just keeps on coming with the demotivators for creators to create! oooooooof i'm just 32uejkd1!!!jdffhs someone hold me back
