Writing advice from someone who's read way too much fanfiction!!

─ .✦ If your villain monologues for more than two paragraphs, your hero should've escaped by now or at least checked their phone. Real people don't wait politely for evil speeches to finish. They interrupt, get bored and say things like "okay but can you get to the point I have dinner plans."

─ .✦ Stop having your characters look in mirrors to describe themselves. Your protagonist doesn't wake up and think "I looked at my reflection and saw my shoulder-length auburn hair and piercing green eyes." They think "ugh I look like death" and move on. Find literally ANY other way.

─ .✦ If every sentence in your action scene is the same length it reads like a grocery list with violence. Short punchy sentences for fast moments. Longer flowing ones when they catch their breath and realize oh god that hurt. Variety is your friend and so is rhythm.

─ .✦ Your character can cry without it being beautiful. Let them be UGLY. Let their face get blotchy and their nose run and their eyes puff up. Let them hiccup and gasp and wipe snot on their sleeve. Crying IS GROSS!

Something nobody told me about caffeine is that you can get withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking it

I went from consuming NO caffeine, to slowly escalating to around 150-300mg of caffeine a day to keep up with sleep issues, to suddenly stopping cold turkey when I flew out to the middle of nowhere and couldn’t get more and it was straight up a solid 5-6 days of thinking I had the flu

Nausea, spins, major fatigue, and some seriously heinous headaches

It was so bad that after two weeks without I swore I’d never pick up an energy drink again and made an appointment with a doctor to fix my sleep issues

Like. Not to be all “oooooh your body is a temple” but if I knew quitting CAFFEINE had similar effects as running out of my prescription meds I might have been a bit more careful drinking it in the first place

Caffeine is a

Drug

And don't get me wrong, I love drugs. I think they're rad. I think there should be fewer barriers between most drugs and adults using them.

However, something that I think is fundamentally immoral is giving someone a drug without telling them:

That it's a drug

What the full possible effects of the drug are including side effects

What the withdrawal effects are like

And society treats caffeine like it's not a drug. We act like it's not a stimulant. We sell it on street corners. We sell in schools, to children.

We don't tell you what the withdrawals are like. We don't even acknowledge that there will be any, even though they can be severe.

In addition to what OP listed, other possible withdrawal symptoms include:

Hand Tremors

Anxiety

Irritability

Brain Fog

Low Mood

Insomnia (yes, counterintuitive as it may seem this is common withdrawal symptom)

Muscle Pain/Stiffness

Caffeine is a stimulant drug that causes physical dependency quite rapidly. The withdrawal symptoms can persist for days to months.

I reiterate that I think drugs are cool. I'm drinking a caffeinated beverage as I type this. But I feel strongly that we should treat drugs like they're drugs. We should not pretend that the legality of a substance negates its status as A Drug™

So Mattel came out with different Barbie body types a couple years ago, right? There’s your normal body, but there’s also Curvy, Petite, and Tall now.

Around the same time, they came out with the Made to Move body, which has a ton more articulation than your normal Barbie.

Customizers love the Made to Move body, because hey, a lot more fun positions to put a doll in for photographing. But now Mattel has started making the Made to Move dolls with the additional body types from above. We’ve gotten a Curvy Made to Move doll so far, afaik.

This Queen Elizabeth doll, though? Is the first time there’s been a Petite Made to Move body released by Mattel. So customizers were buying it up not out of any care about Queen Elizabeth — but they were buying it to pop her head right off and use the new body for other dolls!

One of my favorite phrases my Creative Writing professor had for when you’re writing fantasy is ‘giving your story a Flux Capacitor’.

Because it’s not real, it doesn’t exist. But the way it’s thrown into Back to the Future, at no point does it throw the audience off or suspend any more disbelief than time travel would. You believe Doc when he says he created the Flux Capacitor - the thing that makes time travel possible, because the universe never questions him. 

So it essentially means like, there are going to be elements to your universe that are just not gonna make any sense, even if you set up a whole system based on it. And the only way to make it work is completely own it. You cannot second-guess your system or else the reader will too. You can give it the strangest explanation, but write it like you own it.
