Marc wasn’t really sure how it came around. Today just felt… heavy.
Not the suffocating kind, but the kind that was certainly noticeable. The kind that just lingered like a nagging in his ear.
The man had tried all kinds to take his mind off it. Music, cooking… hell, he’d even tried reading one of Steven’s many history books.
And while they were distractions, they were temporary and not all that effective.
Now, he was sat on the couch of the flat, the TV illuminating the room.
He couldn’t tell you what was playing, because he wasn’t really watching. More staring through the screen rather than at it as his mind continued to run at lightning speeds.
However, the sound of the door to the flat opening eventually snapped him out of it.
“Heya, mate!”
…Steven was home already? God, had he really just spent all that time moping around? Well, that’s certainly not something to be proud of.
He paused whatever he’d been staring at, running a hand through his hair as he looked up at his brother, his smile slightly forced.
“Hey, buddy. How was the museum today?”
“Eh, same old same old.” Steven shrugged, hanging up his coat and his bag. “Lotta marketing blunders and Donna being an arse…”
He mumbled the end of that sentence, getting a small huff of a laugh out of Marc.
“Anyway, how’s your day been?”
…Marc was almost about to lie. Say he’d been productive and at least gotten something good out of the day.
…But he also remembered the advice from, well, basically everyone else he knew. Communicate. Properly.
“It, uh…” He hesitated, avoiding eye contact but noticing Steven cocking his head to the side in confusion out the corner of his eye. Damn it. “It could’ve been better, I guess.”
“What happened?” Marc felt the space next to him on the couch sink a little as Steven sat next to him.
“I don’t… really know.” He sighed. “There’s just been this… thing lingering around me all day. And not a good kind of thing.”
“Just a kind of down-ish feeling?”
“…Yeah.” He nodded, elbows rested on his knees as he held his own hands.
Steven’s frown grew softer, and he reached over to pat Marc on the back. Just a small gesture of comfort.
“Awh, I’m sorry, mate. I know the feeling. Anything I can do to help?”
The avatar paused… before shaking his head.
“I don’t know, not really. I’m just glad you’re back.”
That tugged Steven’s lips upward a bit, and he gave Marc a final pat before opening his arms.
Marc hesitated again, simply staring at Steven for a moment. …Screw it, he shifted forward and wrapped his arms right back around him, hiding his face in his shoulder too.
“…Thanks, bud.”
Another smile made its way onto Steven’s face, and after a few moments passed for an idea to slip into his head, Marc was woefully unable to notice it shifting into a cheeky little grin.
“You know… there is something that might help.”
Marc should’ve known he was up to something from the get go. But the relief of finally being able to spend time with his family must’ve clouded his judgement a little.
“Yeah? What’s that?”
He was given no answer. Well, other than the feeling of a few fingers digging into his sides.
Marc instantly tensed up. God dammit, he should’ve known this was coming. But did he make any attempt to move Steven or even himself away? He didn’t.
…Interesting.
“S-Steven, don’t you dare-“ He softly argued, his teeth clenching into an overt smile. Hey, no one ever said he still wasn’t gonna protest.
“What? I’m not doin anything.” Steven replied, his tone as mischievous as ever.
“Thehen who the hell ihis??” The knight replied, placing his hands on Steven’s shoulders but still hardly fighting back.
“Ohoh, I think you know who, mate!” Steven giggled, wrapping his arms around Marc again and moving forward to get him on his back, basically dumping all his weight onto him in a heavy hug so he couldn’t escape.
“Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten all about your favourite monster now!”
…Well, if the simple word of ‘monster’ didn’t make Marc’s stomach do a flip of nerves (for better or for worse), it would be light years before they found out what would.
“I-I don’t knohow what you’re talking about-“
“You behetter! Cuz he’s about to get this little behelly!” He used a god awful cooing tone before his hands made their way to Marc’s stomach, squishing and pinching around above his shirt.
“HehEHEY-!” Marc yelped, his giggles still gruff but a lot more prominent. “It’s nohohot little, you bahAHASTARD-!”
An exaggerated gasp noise left the man, his jaw slightly lower in feigned surprise.
“How ruhude! That’s no way to speak to the Tickle Monster, mate! Guess he’ll just have to find somewhere else to stay!” Steven shrugged with a dramatic huff, his hands starting to spider up and past his ribs, making Marc let out a small squeak noise that the museum worker would without a doubt be bringing up later.
“Maybe… right up… here! Tickletickletickletickletickle!” His digits soon wormed their way under Marc’s arms, the avatar’s laughter going up a few octaves as he threw his head back.
“NYAHAHAH DAHahammihit!! Y-You lihittle shiHIHEHEE-!” Marc had to quickly bury his face into his hands, but it didn’t muffle the short squeal he let out in time.
“Ahahawhhh, now isn’t that sweheet? Don’t hide that face, Tickle Monster wants to sehee!” Steven crooned, laughing right along with Marc in a way that looked like he was having more fun than his brother was.
“SCREW THE TICKLE MOHONSTER-!”
“Marc!” Steven argued gently, still acting as if he’d been personally insulted. “Rihight, unless you show the Tickle Monster some respehect, he’s gonna keep gohoing!”
“Lihike-“ Marc snickered before basically sealing his own fate. “Like I cahare-“
Despite his best attempts to be ‘annoyed’, Steven couldn’t help but smile. Marc’s happy face looked no short of genuine, and it was a sight that made a loving warmth spread through his entire being.
A little chuckle (that Marc probably should’ve taken as a warning) soon left him, and he gave him a grin.
“You’re about to.”
“…Wait, what’s that supposed to-?”
Steven didn’t even give Marc a chance to finish his question before burying his face right into Marc’s neck, blowing a strong raspberry.
“PPPBBBHHHFFFTT!!”
“AHAHACK STEVEHEHEN!!” Marc just about squealed, scrunching up as best he could.
Steven only giggled, the noise being made against Marc’s neck only serving to make him laugh more.
“Tickle tickle, mahate!” He sang, even starting to wiggle his fingers against Marc’s ribs.
“EHEEEK-!”
…Yeah, he was certainly denying that noise later.
“NAHT THEHERE, NAHAHAT THERE!!” He laughed, eyes squeezed shut as he tried to ignore just how much he was actually enjoying this.
“Alright, alrihihight.” Steven chuckled, moving his hands away. “Up you get, you big luhump.” He took hold of Marc’s hand and gently pulled him back up.
“Oh, mahahan…” Marc mumbled, the giggle fit lingering as he ran a hand through his curls again. “You’re the wohorst-“
“Correction: the Tickle Monster is the worst.” Steven held up a finger like the nerd he was, before giving Marc another smile.
“And I doubt you mean that, because look how happy you are now!”
…He wasn’t wrong. Marc probably wouldn’t have believed you if you said his melancholy would pass before Steven got home.
“…Yeah. Thanks. For- taking my mind off it all and stuff.” Marc replied, genuine but struggling to show it.
Steven’s smile softened more if that was even possible, and he shuffled closer.
“You’re welcome, mate. But don’t think I’m done there!”
He then wrapped his arms around Marc again, starting to pepper his face in loving brotherly kisses.
“Whahaha-?! Stevehen! Gohod, how old are yohou??” Marc laughed, going back to his half assed shoves that proved just how much he actually didn’t want to move away from all the love.
“Old enohough to accept that kisses are allowed for ahall ages! Now c’mon, mate! Smile for mehe! Mwahmwahmwahmwahmwahah!”
Marc was showered with even more affection that night if that was even possible. Sure, it flustered the poor man to his very core. But would he trade it for anything else?
