@starkgirlinthetardis tagged me for top 10 tv shows! If I tag you tag 10 of your buddies and do the same!
All time:
01. The West Wing: The most perfect of perfect shows. Brilliant characters, amazing dialogue, incredible relationships between the characters (including friendships between women), explored important issues in an interesting way.
02. Arrested Development: The funniest show ever. I really love it when shows reward dedicated viewers, especially in this age of instant gratification. It's kind of like the David Lynch movie of tv shows. Sometimes I recognize things I never saw before, even though I've watched the entire series dozens of times.
03. Twin Peaks: It's off the rails in the best possible way. David Lynch's mixture of mystery, macabre, and melodrama is brillaint, and it worked so well being brough to the hourly weekly television format.
04. Pushing Daisies: It's easily one of the most visually stunning shows ever made. It has a quirky charm that manages to find the perfect balance and not slip over into overly oddball. It's a modern day fairy tale with such an original idea for a love story. It mixes the darkness of murder with the brightness of the aesthetics and the personality of the characters, which really sells the idea that no matter how dark or bad things get, there is brightness in the world and every second is worth living.
05. Deadwood: David Milch is the greatest television writer perhaps ever and there needs to be another Milch show on the air right now. His dialogue is so eloquent and beautiful, even when characters are saying the ugliest things. It's so distinctly Milch, but amazingly every character has their own clear voice. And yay for amazing female characters!
06. The Wire: Because it's so unsentimental and matter of fact about it's subject matter (the complete failure of the system), one might think that The Wire is completely emotionless. But if you invest in it, it packs a heartbreaking punch
07. Human Target: Few shows are so secure in their tone right out of the gate, but Human Target was a fun action show with its tongue firmly in its cheek from day one.
08. Firefly: It's ridiculous this show only lasted half a season. In such a short amount of time Whedon crafted a compelling storyline, built a vivd world, and developed a large cast of characters.
09. Lost: Lost was simply an experience. It was something that you just got caught up in. But as fascinating as the mystery was, what really drew me in week after week was the cast of characters, so astonishingly well developed and written.
10.Buffy the Vampire Slayer: It managed to be campy and heartbreakingly real all at the same time. Some of the best character development I've ever seen.
