1920s Lookbook

As the world emerged from WWI, fashion went in a new direction, with an emphasis on simplicity and straight lines. From this emerged the boyish dropped waist silhouette, which has become synonymous with the decade. This look was embraced by the flappers, feminist women who engaged in "unladylike" behaviors like partying and voting. Their political beliefs were also reflected in their dress: wearing androgynous silhouettes and chopping off their hair. Hemlines also shrank from floor-length dresses to just below the knee. This was both a political statement and a practical choice; as women became more active in society, shorter skirts allowed for an increased range of movement.

1890s Lookbook

The 1890s were a transition decade: between the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The bustles of the past two decades collapsed into a bell-shaped skirt, and the decade's distinctive "leg of mutton" sleeves became popular. Women also enjoyed newfound independence, with the number of women employed outside the home doubling.

1880s Lookbook

The 1880s were a continuation of the era of bustles that had started a decade earlier. There were two prominent silhouettes at this time. The first was a dress without a horizontal waist seam, which hugged the body with a much smaller bustle in the first half of the decade. This was followed by a rigid, shelf-like bustle, which began developing around 1983.

I needed some boots with a period-appropriate heel shape for my Victorian and Edwardian Sims, so I made this recolor of the shoes from this set by @satterlly.

1900s Lookbook

The Edwardian Era is marked by the death of Queen Victoria in England in 1901 and the start of the short 10-year reign of King Edward VII. Silhouettes did not change substantially from the previous decade, as the invention of the "health corset" in the 1880s pushed the bust forward and the hips back to decrease pressure on the abdomen, creating the S-shape and pigeon bust associated with the Gibson Girl. Dresses were usually separates as opposed to being one piece. One popular style of this decade was the lacy white "lingerie" dress.

1910s Lookbook

The sinking of the Titanic, WWI, the Spanish flu pandemic, it's the 1910s! Throughout the decade, the classic Edwardian S-curve silhouette gradually faded away. In its wake came a revival of the empire waist, and "hobble skirts" which tapered in at the bottom and were difficult to walk in. As is the case during wartime, the "war to end all wars" caused fashion to become simpler and more utilitarian. This simplicity persisted after the war, eventually giving rise to the flapper silhouette of the 20s.

1870s Lookbook

Transitioning from the 1860s to the 1870s, the volume in skirts shifted to the back: the hoop skirt was out, and the bustle was IN! This trend lasted in different forms for the next 20 or so years. This era was also when sideburns reached their cultural peak, having been popularized by Union general Ambrose Burnside a decade earlier during the American Civil War. After the 70's, we also see earrings go out of fashion as upper-class society began to view piercing as a vulgar practice.
