The Gila River is one of the last wild, free-flowing rivers in the Southwest. Starting high in the mountains of the Black Range of Americas first Wilderness Area, the Gila River begins its cycle. It feeds a striving ecosystem that inhabits a vast array of life, from bugling Elk to the elusive Gila trout.

Sculpted in mountain ranges lush in vegetation; the Gila Wilderness is home to many tributaries and lakes. At the headwaters of the Gila, the Mogollon People constructed and inhabited the Gila Cliff Dwellings for its abundance of water over a century ago. Geronimo once stated “I was born at the headwaters of the Gila River”. Turkey Creek to be exact.

Today the Gila River is threatened by the plans of damming the river at Turkey Creek. After three past failed attempts, a fourth try doesn’t make sense. The waters deserve to preserve its Wild Nature, with no construction of dams to interrupt its character. With the help of The American People and their voice, The Gila can live to strive another day.
