“I saw this at the planning stage...”
The Happiness Patrol - season 26 - 1988
FInally got around to watching The Happiness Patrol. Gotta say that I kinda dig the hell out of that serial. I mean, how can I not love that VERY 80's hair and those pink jumpsuits!
The Kandyman has a really neat design, and watching how he moves is actually really quite fascinating. Is he good at walking? No lol. But gotta say that finger dexterity is impressive for that kind of costume. Also them lips. I love them lips. The swirly eyes are probably the best part of the whole ensemble though, gotta say! Shame he had to die. What a fun villain and design! ;^; He may be on my list of favorite Doctor Who villains, gotta say.
Also Earl Sigma. I like the guy. Would certainly not mind seeing him again. Had some pretty good chemistry with the Doctor and their little handshake at the end there was adorable! Gotta love seeing them playing a harmonica/spoons duet! Very neat and cute!
Also also, what the hell was it there at the end where Gilbert M. just casually mentions, like, "Oh yeah. I accidentally created a virus that killed almost half the population of my home planet. Got exiled for it. Shame." Like that came out of NOWHERE! Just like... EXCUSE ME!? There was no inkling of a hint to any of this before this exact moment! I want to see more of that story, please! Well, I just hope that he and Joseph C. make a decent life for themselves out there, in space, on the run. Together. No one else. (These two are space married now. You cannot convince me otherwise.)
I do not really know what specifically is going on with with the political commentary/criticism of Margret Thatcher, but it was an enjoyable serial nevertheless.
Lastly with some of the aesthetics going on here I've gotta wonder... Did We Happy Few lift some ideas from The Happiness Patrol...? It's the white painted faces that really made me think this. I mean, in concept they're fairly similar. There's a population living under a totalitarian dictatorship where happiness is compulsory. And the little things just kinda rhyme about the two pieces of media. Downers and killjoys being the underclass that are to be executed for bringing everyone else down. Faces painted white with grotesque smiles. Strawberry being Helen A's favorite flavor, and I feel like I recall the joy pills that the main character takes in We Happy Few to be strawberry. An underclass of people just trying to survive in the underground of the city, be that the sewer or the pipes. Things just kinda rhyme here, and so I feel like We Happy Few must have taken some inspiration, right...?

His First Ride 1907
‘His First Ride’ was one of the many films produced early in the career of ‘Broncho Billy’ Anderson at his studio in Colorado. Most of those films were cowboy shoot-’em-ups: this one (judging from the available footage) is clearly a stunt comedy. The films produced by Anderson’s Colorado unit were distributed by Colonel Selig. This an amusing mini-feature that, while based on one very simple…
