Author’s Note: So this got a whole lot longer than I thought it was going to be. The ideas I had for this had been great and then I just kept adding to it. I would have made this into two parts, but I had written it all and figured this would just be a longer one shot. I do hope you guys enjoy this as much as I enjoyed writing it.
"There, that's the last of it." Kol's voice rang through the room as he walked in through the front door. He had just placed the last moving box inside the house. "I don't understand why we couldn't just compel people to do the moving for us."
Y/N had been standing in what was to be their living room as she began opening boxes to put things in their new places. Her Y/E/C eyes rolled at his words just as she pulled an item out of the box.
"That would be cheating." She said looking over at him. "We made a deal remember? We do this on our own without compelling any help."
"How could I forget?" Kol said as a smirk began to grow on his lips as he made his way over to Y/N. He wrapped his arms around her from behind and gently kissed her neck. "It was the only I could get you to agree to move in with me."
A chuckle passed Y/N's lips as she shook her head. "That isn't true. I had already agreed to move in with you well before we made that deal. I just wanted to do this as much as humanly possible.”
“Easier for you to do since you are human.” He whined slightly as he nuzzled her neck.
Y/N shook her head. “No more complaining.” She said as she turned in his arms, wrapping her own around his neck. “We have so much unpacking to do before your siblings get here.”
Kol rolled his eyes before leaning in to kiss her softly. “Where do you want me?” He asked with a small smirk.
Hitting his chest in a playful manner, Y/N looked towards the hall. “Guest bedrooms need to be set up. I’ll even let you use your vampire abilities to get it done.”
“That’s more like it.” He said before pulling away and making his way down the hall. There were three guest bedrooms he was going to have to set up. As he did that, Y/N continued to unpack the things in the living room.
As she did so, she came across a framed photo of her and her siblings. Elena and Jeremy were only a few years older than her. She remembered when that photo had been taken, it had just been days before her parents accident.
They had gone out to have a picnic, just to enjoy the family time. This had been before they had been dragged into the world of the supernatural. Before Elena was known as the doppelganger, before Jeremy became a hunter, and before Y/N had found herself as a ordinary human in the mix of it all. It had seemed like an entirely different world to her now.
Y/N remembered all of the pain and death that followed that picture. And yet they had all grown stronger from it. While others still held grudges, Y/N had found a way to move past them even though she tried not to. Proof of that was standing in the other room.
After the several times that Kol had tried to kill her family, Y/N should have ran for the hills when she saw him in the streets of New Orleans during her little road trip after graduation. But there was something different about him. After a few days of fighting all urges to try to kill him and actually accept his offer of a date, things grew between the two. It was how they currently found themselves in a new house smacked directly in between New Orleans and Mystic Falls.
Of course their relationship hadn’t come without complications. The Mikaelsons were skeptical at first about the woman that Kol had began to fall for. Especially since she had a part in his death the first time around. It took some time before they began to accept Y/N as a part of the family. After they had, they had sworn to protect her as if she had always been family.
The Gilberts and the Salvatores on the other hand, they knew nothing about it. Y/N had watched as the rest of her family had found their places in the world, while she kept her secret. Kol understood why she had. The Salvatores held grudges and they were never one to let them go. Elena wasn’t any better either. She despised the Mikaelsons for all the pain they had caused. Y/N just couldn’t find the right words to explain to them without them throwing it out of proportion.
She knew she was going to have to tell them eventually. She just hoped they would be understanding that this is what she wanted. That she was completely happy with Kol and nothing was going to take that away from her.
“Y/N?” A voice called out from the front door that had caused her Y/E/C eyes to widen as she looked away from the frame in her hands.
“E-Elena?” Y/N called out as she placed the frame down on the opened box and began making her way towards the door. Just beyond the threshold, Elena and the Salvatore brothers stood there. Elena held a pie in her hand while Damon held a bottle in his. “What are you guys doing here?”
“We thought we’d surprise you.” Jeremy said walking up the porch. Unlike the others, he walked through the front door and pulled his sister into a hug. Y/N hugged him back even though she was internally panicking.
“Elena told us that you had just bought a house all on your own and figured a nice house warming was needed.” Damon said as he leaned against the entryway, waiting for an invite inside.
“Of course.” Y/N said as she pulled away from Jeremy. “Come on in.” She said with a smile. She watched as they began entering the house before her eyes moved towards the hall. She hoped that Kol had heard them and was smart enough to stay out of sight for now. “As you can see I’m still trying to unpack.” She brought her hand up to the back of her neck to rub it.
“That’s fine.” Elena said as she pulled her sister into a hug before Damon and Stefan done the same.
“This is a nice house.” Stefan noted as he looked around the living room.
“Thanks. We thought it was the perfect place to live.” Y/N said not realizing the words she had said as she took the pie and bottle and placing it down on an open space in the living room.
“We?” Jeremy asked with a raised brow.
Y/N’s eyes widened once more as she looked at her siblings and friends. “We.” She said with a slight nod. Guess now was a good a time as any to tell them. She thought to herself. She bit down on her lip as she tried to find the right words to tell them. “I’ve been seeing someone.”
A smile pulled at their faces as they looked at Y/N. “That’s good news.” Elena said with a nod.
“Now you’ll have to tell us all the details about who he is.” Damon said with a smirk. “Or I can always compel him to make sure he’s a good enough guy for you.”
“You actually can’t compel him.” Y/N’s voice was soft as she began playing with the strip of tape hanging off one of the opened boxes. “Compulsion wont work on him.”
“Now I’m curious.” Stefan said as he leaned against the back of the couch. “Where did you meet him?”
Elena rolled her eyes and shook her head. “You guys are acting like the overprotective brothers when her own overprotective siblings are standing in the same room.”
That made Y/N give off a nervous laugh. At the same time her phone buzzed in her pocket pulling it out, she looked at the message.
Just tell them.
Another message came in right after.
Its excruciating to hear you struggle with this while I'm here hiding in a room like a dirty secret.
A laugh passed her lips as she read the message before another one came in.
Or should I just bust out of the room and yell surprise?
“I haven’t seen that smile in a long time.” Jeremy noted pulling Y/N’s eyes away from the phone.
“I’m happy Jer.” She said with a nod. “I’ve made a life for myself just like the rest of you have. I started falling in love with someone who makes me happy and I love the life we are creating.” Her smile grew as she spoke. She truly loved every moment of her time with Kol. “And I need you all to understand that.”
“Of course we will.” Elena said with a smile. “All I want is my baby sister safe and happy.”
Y/N took a deep breath. “Even if it means being in love with an original?”
For a moment it was silent. Their mouth’s dropped slightly as they took in the information of that simple question.
“Excuse me.” Damon said as he took a step closer. “A what?”
Y/N gulped slightly before she stood a little straighter. “I’ve been dating Kol Mikaelson for months and he is who I’ve moved in with.”
“No.” Jeremy said instantly as he shook his head. “Not happening.”
Y/N scoffed as she crossed her arms over her chest. “You have no say in it.”
“Like hell he doesn’t.” Stefan said watching Y/N. “This is Kol Mikaelson we are talking about here.”
“Seriously, Y/N. What were you thinking?” Elena asked as she took a step towards her sister. “After everything he has done to you and our family, how could you want to be with him?”
Anger had boiled with in Y/N. Instead of really thinking about what she should say, she let the first thing that came to mind pass her lips. “How could you want to be with Damon? I mean after everything he has done to our family you still managed to find a way to be with him. He killed Jeremy, remember. Threatened to kill me a time or two if my memory serves me right. Then there is th-”
“I think that’s enough, darling.” Kol’s voice carried into the room. He knew how much Y/N’s family had meant to her. If she continued as she had been, he knew that things were about to reach the point of no return. “Plus now there is an audience listening outside.”
All eyes in the room, except for Y/N’s, had been on Kol. They had been glaring at the Mikaelson even though they made no move to act out towards him. Y/N’s eyes had been on her family, her head shaking in disappointment.
“I have more guests to see.” Her voice causing the others to look back towards her. “You can either be civil enough to stay or you can leave-”
“We won’t be leaving without you.” Jeremy said cutting her off.
“This is my home. I don’t plan on leaving.” She backed away slowly before turning to head towards the front door.
The moment she opened it, the rest of the Mikaelson family stood on the porch. There was a worried look on each of their faces as their eyes landed on you.
“If this is a bad time love, we can always come back later.” Klaus said giving Y/N a small smile.
Y/N shook her head slightly. “No, you guys were invited to come. They showed up unexpectedly. Come on in.” She said as she moved out of the way to allow them entry.
As each of them entered, they gave Y/N a hug before moving further into the house. It was when Rebekah, who was the last one in, gave her a hug that lasted the longest.
“Just say the word and we’ll help you take out the trash.” It was meant to be whispered into her ear but with a household currently filled with vampires, it had easily been heard.
A small smile pulled at Y/N’s lips as she hugged Rebekah back. “I don’t think that will be necessary.”
“Something to keep in mind though.” Pulling away, Rebekah gave her a smile before joining the others in the living room.
As Y/N returned to the living room, she could easily feel the tension that was now growing. She rolled her eyes slightly as she came to stand between the two families.
“They’ve known and you’ve decided to keep this from us?” Jeremy asked as he moved to stand next to Y/N. “You trust them over us?”
Y/N shook her head. “That’s not the case here, Jer. This is now family to me.” She looked towards Kol and gave him a smile before she looked back at Jeremy. “He’s where I feel like I’m at home. Nothing is going to change that.”
“Yeah well both your siblings have decided against it.” Damon said as he grabbed a hold of Y/N’s arm. “We’re leaving. Now.”
“That's not your decision to make.” Kol said as his hand grabbed a hold of Damon’s arm, tightening his hand enough to make Damon wince in pain and to let go of Y/N. “If she wants to leave, that is her choice. You won’t be making that decision for her.”
The moment Y/N was free from Damon’s grasp, she took a step back. She bit down on her lip as she shook her head slightly. “Just leave.” She said softly before quickly making her way down the hall towards the master bedroom. The sound of the door slamming shut was loud in their ears.
A sigh passed Elena’s lips as she moved to head towards the hall. “I’ll go talk to her.”
“No.” Kol said shaking his head as he let go of Damon. “I can personally guarantee you that you are the last person she wishes to speak with.” He took a step back from Jeremy and Damon before looking towards Elena. “You know she’s been wanting to tell you for a while now. But she was afraid of doing so for this very reason. I’ve spent countless days trying to convince her that you’d be as accepting as my family has been. But all of you have made that fear a reality.” He shook his head once more in disgust. “Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going to see if I can convince her to leave that room.” He took a few steps backwards. “You’re more than welcome to leave, it makes no difference to me.”
Kol had barely been gone from the room for a few seconds before Rebekah looked to her older brothers and held her hand out. “Alright pay up.”
Both Klaus and Elijah rolled their eyes as they pulled out their wallets and placed several bills into Rebekah’s awaiting hand. A smile pulled on Rebekah’s lips as she looked at the money before putting the money into her pocket.
“You place bets on this?” Elena asked. The Mikaelson siblings could hear the judgement coming from the doppelganger.
“Of course we did.” Rebekah said with a shrug. “It was only a matter of time until lovely Y/N was going to tell the lot of you. It all just depended on the outcome of the conversation and I must say,” Rebekah brought her hands up to give a small round of claps. “You’ve done well on making your sister feel as if she is still a child and incapable of making decisions.”
“That isn’t true.” Elena tried to defend their actions.
“We prefer if she stayed out of your family’s grasp.” Damon said glaring at the Mikaelsons.
A scoff passed Elijah’s lips as he tucked his hand into his pants pocket. “We said the same thing about your family the day Kol had announced their relationship. Though if I recall correctly, it was my brother’s argument of Y/N changing him for the better that had persuaded us with in minutes that there was no separating them.”
“There was that argument about Y/N’s part in Kol’s death the first time around.” Klaus noted. “I had actually offered to rid the world of your sister for her wrongdoings, but Kol had insisted other wise.”
“If you so much as laid a hand on her,” Elena began to say as she took a few steps towards Klaus. But Damon wrapped an arm around her waist to keep her from going anywhere. “I’ll kill you myself Klaus.” A laugh came from the siblings at the threat.
“Cause that’s worked so well the first several tries.” Rebekah said with a roll of her eyes.
“Threats aside,” Elijah began. “We believe our siblings have been able to put aside the past to make this relationship work. While it is obvious you still hold a grudge from our time in Mystic Falls, we assure you, your sister will always be safe with us, as a member of our family.”
While the conversation had continued out in the living room, in the master bedroom, Y/N was laying on the floor with her face buried in a pillow. Boxes still untouched as Kol hadn’t gotten a chance to make it to this particular room when Y/N’s family had arrived.
“I knew this was going to end badly.” Y/N’s words had been a mumbled mess due to the pillow covering her face as well as the fact that she had been crying. Yet Kol had been able to understand her easily.
“You still stood your ground with them.” Kol noted as he lay beside her. He laid on his side with his arm propped up to hold his head up. “If this wasn’t at all what you wanted, you would have easily left with them the moment you were free from Damon’s hold.”
While there was a part of Kol that had been afraid of that very thing, that fear had left him the moment Y/N ran for their room instead of the door. While it would always be Y/N’s choice to stay or not, Kol had been glad that so far she had been choosing to stay. He hated the idea of her leaving. Especially with them still in the process of moving in to their new house.
“What if I lose them over this?” Of course the words had still been muffled by the pillow.
Kol sighed as he ran his hand down her back. “It wouldn’t be your loss, darling. It’d be theirs. They wouldn’t be able to see how happy you are or how well adjusted you’ll be to vampirism when the time comes. They also wouldn’t be able to see how much we make each other better.” The words had caused Y/N’s head to lift out of the pillow, earning a smile from Kol. “Now there is my beautiful girlfriend.”
A smile pulled at Y/N’s lips as she looked at him. “How is it that you know what to say?”
Kol chuckled. “Centuries of experience. Someday I’ll happily pass on my wisdom to you.”
Y/N laughed and shook her head before turning on her side to face him. “You know I’m not going anywhere, right?” She asked as she placed her hand on his cheek. “They’d have to drag me out of here kicking and screaming.”
“They wouldn’t be able to get their hands on you.” He said with a slight nod. “Not with me or my siblings there to make sure you are safe.”
She smiled at his words before leaning over and kissing him softly. Kol returned the kiss, bringing his hand up to her cheek.
“Do you think our living room is destroyed because of them?” She asked as she pulled away from him.
“Oh I’m sure we would have heard something.” He said with a slight shrug.
“I know we have to go back out there, but I really don’t want to face them right now.” Y/N said with a sigh.
A smirk pulled at Kol’s lips. “There is a way to get them to leave without leaving this room.” He suggested as he ran his hand down along her side.
Y/N rolled her eyes and shook her head. “Not happening Kol Mikaelson.”
“It was worth a shot.” He said before leaning in to kiss her softly before moving to stand up. He held a hand out to her as he leaned down slightly. “Lets head back out there.” She sighed loudly before grabbing a hold of his hand. Kol pulled her up to her feet before putting an arm around her shoulders. “It will be fine.”
The moment Y/N entered the living room with Kol, she could still feel the tension in the room. It was obvious that in her absence that the two families weren’t going to make amends. Especially with the way that they were at opposite ends of the room.
Looking towards her siblings, she took a deep breath and let it go. “I’m staying here.” She said with a nod. “I have no intentions of leaving Kol any time soon. You guys as my family can either learn to accept that the Mikaelsons will be a part of my life or you can’t be a part of my life.”
“Y/N/N…” Elena said softly. “Is this really what you want?”
Y/N nodded her head with a smile on her face. “Every bit of it. I haven’t been this happy since before we knew about vampires. And I would pick Kol a million times before I picked leaving him behind now.”
She watched as her siblings looked at each other. Jeremy still didn’t look convinced. To be honest for him it was going to take some time for him to get used to. But there was no way he was going to lose contact with his baby sister.
Neither was Elena. They were all they had left when it came to family. Losing a sibling again, while it may just be the contact, Elena wouldn’t be able to live with herself. But it didn’t mean she wasn’t going to be keeping a close eye on her sister.
Elena walked up to Y/N and pulled her into a hug. “Okay.” Elena said against her ear.
Y/N hugged her sister back, not wanting to let go just yet. For a moment she had believed she was going to lose her siblings to her decision. This was just a start. Y/N knew that it was going to take time. But at least she would have her family in her life.
“Alright now all three of you have to pay up.” Kol’s voice said earning groans from everyone in the room.
Y/N turned her head slightly to look at Kol, a smile on her face even as she watched him collect money from his siblings while she continued to hug Elena. Things would definitely be okay.

The Republic of Kiribati, so established in 1979, has been inhabited for millennia by the Micronesian I-Kiritati, who have in turn been introduced to Melanesian, Polynesian, British, Southeast Asian, and many other cultures and influences through the centuries. Called the Gilbert and Ellice Islands by the British (Gilbert for the explorer Thomas Gilbert who sighted many of the islands in the late 1780s) (the Ellice Islands would later become Tuvalu), Kiribati (the Gilbertese rendering of Gilberts) stretches across 1.3 million square miles of equatorial Pacific, many of the islands floating just above sea level. Read J. Maarten Troost’s The Sex Lives of Cannibals: Adrift in the Equatorial Pacific to learn more about Kiribati. And also just to read a great book.

"You've got to be kidding." Damon said as he looked at Elizabeth Forbes.
They had currently been standing in the middle of the Salvatore living room. It had been just hours after the new Mayor had taken over the office. In that time alone things had already been quickly changing. From Officer Forbes' perspective things were about to become interesting with these new found changes. She believed it was better to keep Damon in the loop than him find out later when the Mayor requested a meeting with him.
"He's doing this his way and creating a whole new council. There is nothing that I can do." Liz said as she placed her hands on her hips. "Founding families mean nothing to him in this moment or their status in this town."
"We must still have some kind of pull in this." Damon said trying to think of anything that they could possibly do to keep them all in the loop without having to sit around and wait.
"Unless you are extremely close friends with any of the Y/L/N Family, there is no way to get into any of the council meetings. I, thankfully, have known and been friends with his sister for some time and she trusts me." Liz said with a slight nod. "I'll try to keep you guys as updated as possible, but I have no idea how this is going play out."
"Y/L/N. Besides the obvious, why does that name sound familiar?" Damon asked. While it wasn't a name he had heard on a daily basis until Y/D/N came into town, at that moment it was sticking out in his mind but couldn't quite place where he has heard or seen that last name.
"His daughter was raised here in Mystic Falls. She's been the secretary to the Mayor's office for almost five years now. Mayor Lockwood had been the one to hire her in." Liz informed him. "You may know her name just by looking at some of the paperwork you come across from the office."
"Y/N?" Damon asked with a sigh. He remembered her from the occasional times he had seen her in passing. While he never actually spoke with her or gotten to know the woman, he knew who she was. “Why am I willing to bet anything that she was probably feeding her dad information that he needs to know about this town to make these changes?”
Liz shook her head. "Lets not jump to conclusions. I've known Y/N for a long time and I am certain she knows nothing about the supernatural world. Her Aunt has kept her in the dark for a reason."
"There is only one way to find out for sure." Damon said as he thought for a moment before he grabbed a hold of his jacket.
"Damon." Liz said with a warning tone.
"What?" He said giving her a small smirk. "It’s not like I'm going over there to kill her. Just to talk with her and see what I can possibly get out of her."
Liz sighed as she shook her head slightly. "Don't do anything stupid to draw more attention to yourself."
"I make no promises." Damon called out as he made his way out the door. Just as he was about to reach the door, Stefan and Elena walked in. “Liz has some news for you.” He said walking past them. “And she’ll fill you in on where I’m going.” He said before Stefan could ask.
Y/N had been sitting at the bar of the Mystic Grill. She held a drink in one hand, a pen in the other, while she looked over the pile of paperwork that had been sitting in front of her. Her Y/H/C hair had still been pulled up into a neat bun that she had yet to pull out since she had left the office over an hour ago. The heel of her black pumps tapped against the stool as her leg bounced slightly.
While she was all for her father becoming the Mayor of Mystic Falls, she hated all the paperwork that now needed to be done. All the paperwork that Mayor Lockwood had left unfinished needed to be compiled and on his desk by tomorrow morning. What also made things a bit difficult was her father’s request for specific files that she was going to have to track down. Many of those files were decades old and lost with in the archives.
From the corner of her eye she could see someone walk up to the bar beside her. “The last time I seen someone sitting here working away as hard as you are, he became a drinking buddy of mine.”
Y/N’s head turned slightly to look at the who had been speaking to her. “That position for me has been filled for quite some time.” She said before looking back down at the paperwork in front of her.
She knew exactly who had been speaking to her. Damon Salvatore definitely wasn’t a stranger to the town and she knew that. He was good looking and she was sure as hell he knew that about himself. While she did have a weakness for the man with gorgeous blue eyes, he had never once actually took the time to notice her as she had hoped he would.
Even at one of the recent Founders Party, she had tried speaking with him. Just a way to introduce herself and to try to get to know the man. He had only given her a vague answer before walking off to speak with Elena Gilbert. While Y/N wasn’t a jealous type, she knew when a person only had eyes for someone else. Before she could even try to get to know him, she decided against it.
“You can always have more than one drinking buddy.” Damon said as he took a seat on the stool next to her.
He watched as her Y/E/C scanned over the documents before her, before placing a ‘sign here’ post it sticker on the page before she continued on reading. The hand that held the glass slowly lifted, bringing the glass up to her lips as she took a drink. “Not interested.” She said once she had swallowed the amber liquid.
Damon had actually frowned at that and Y/N hadn’t missed it. A slight smirk pulled at the corner of her lips as she tried to focus on the paperwork in front of her. While she may have been acting as if she wasn’t at all interested, there was a part of her that had still been interested in the man sitting beside her. She just wasn’t going to give in, for fear that this was just something he was wanting to pass the time.
“Is there something I can help you with, Damon?” She asked, finally looking over at him. She placed the glass down and turned slightly towards him. She watched as his mouth opened slightly and closed soon after when he couldn’t get the words to pass his lips.
This definitely wasn’t what Damon was used to. He was used to women hanging on his every word, without compulsion needed. Of course he knew he could be an ass and just compel her for the information or to even just have her tell her father he needed to be on the council. But the necklace she was currently wearing, he was almost positive that it had vervain hidden with in.
“How about just having a drink or two with someone other than your drinking buddy?” He asked. When he saw her eyebrow raised, he lifted his hands up as if surrendering. “Just until you are done with work. I could really use an outside opinion on a few things.”
Y/N chuckled slightly. “Isn’t that what the bartender is for?”
Damon looked over at Matt and grimaced slightly. “About that, he knows all about the problems. Wouldn’t really help with needing an outsider’s opinion.”
Y/N looked over at the paperwork before looking back at Damon and sighing. “Fine you have until I am done with this stack.” She said as she patted the paperwork in front of her. “And you’re paying for my tab as well.” She said with a grin.
_____
“You’re kidding right?” Y/N asked as she laughed. The paperwork had been finished for quite some time, but the conversations they kept having had made it hard for her to decide it was time to leave.
“Not at all, there are several stories I could tell you about how easily it can be to embarrass my brother.” He said with a slight shake of his head. Damon had been telling her stories of his past that had kept Y/N laughing.
While it was completely off subject from what his ‘problem’ was, Y/N hadn’t seemed to mind. It didn’t hurt that she was slightly buzzed from the alcohol she had been consuming. It made things more interesting.
“That’s still not as bad as falling face first into a crowd at a festival in Richmond all because you were drunk enough to believe you could go crowd surfing.” Y/N said shaking her head with a smile on her face. Her hand absentmindedly reaching up to run her finger along a small scar that rested along her right temple.
“Oh I would have paid to have seen that.” He said giving her a smirk. “Now how exactly did the rebel child become the Mayor’s secretary?” He asked curiously. The whole time he hadn’t brought up her job at the Mayor’s office until now.
The smile she had from laughing fell slightly. “I was having a lot of problems out in Richmond and I when I came home, my Aunt had a job interview lined up for me. Surprisingly, I’ve been great at my job.”
“And how do you feel about your dad becoming Mayor?” Damon was sure that the way she answered this question would give him some of the answers he had been hoping for.
Y/N scoffed. “Not looking forward to it.” She shook her head slightly.
Damon’s eyebrow raised. “I take it the relationship between you isn’t a good one.”
“Nope.” she said popping the ‘p’. She looked down at the empty glass in her hand for a moment. “He was never around. To busy caring for his other family in some other state. But after news reached him that Richard Lockwood had died and that Carol took over, he decided to come here and try to ‘make the town better’.” Her finger ran along the rim of the glass. “Doesn’t help that he’s only been Mayor for a few hours and the mountain of paperwork I have to get to him by tomorrow morning is rather annoying.” She rolled her eyes slightly. “Both Richard and Carol both never gave me this much work in one night.”
There was a slight relief in Damon at her words. Liz had been right. Y/N had no clue about the secrets this town had hiding in its closet. He could see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice that there was nothing off about her previous bosses.
“How can I help to take some of the workload off?” He offered. While it had been mostly for the purpose of wanting to know more about the new Mayor’s plans, he figured it wouldn’t hurt to gain her trust in the process. If she was his possible ticket into the council meetings, he’d help in any way he could.
“Um,” Y/N bit down on her lip for a moment, unsure how to respond to the offer. She had always been one to get her work done on her own, never really needing help. Her eyes moved over to the clock hanging on the wall. Her shoulders sagged slightly as she took in the time and sighed as she looked over at him. “Unless you know someone in Archives that would be willing to let me stay after closing, there really isn’t much.”
A smirk grew on his lips. “Believe me, I can get you all the time you need.” He said as he stood up and pulled out his wallet, placing down a few bills to cover the drinks they had.
“Seriously?” Y/N asked hopeful.
“Seriously.” He said with a nod. “Come on, grab your stuff. As long as we get there before closing, we’ll be fine.”
A smile grew on her lips as she stood up from her seat and collected her things. She really hadn’t expected to be spending hours speaking with Damon. She had almost cursed at herself for not just finishing up her work and heading over to Archives to get the files she had needed hours ago. But with Damon wanting to help, she believed it wasn’t so bad.
It didn’t take long for them to get there and for Damon to compel the employee to let them stay until she had gotten the files they needed. Y/N had been grateful that she even had a chance to do this. She knew her father would be upset if she hadn’t gotten the files for him by tomorrow morning like he wanted them.
“What is it that we are looking for?” Damon asked as he stared at the several aisles of shelves that were filled with boxes.
Placing her bag on one of the tables, she pulled out a sheet of paper that held a long list of old case numbers. Folding it half and carefully tearing it to avoid any of the numbers and letters her father had written, she held one half to Damon.
“Old case files that for some reason my dad wants to look over.” She said as she watched him take the half she offered to him and looked at the numbers.
“He didn’t say why he needed them?” He asked as he began walking down one of the aisle, looking at the numbers written on boxes.
“Something about needing to check if the case files were done correctly.” she said shrugging slightly as she walked over to a different aisle, searching for the ones on her half of the list. “My uncle was a cop here in Mystic Falls before he retired. He used to complain that someone never did the paperwork right. Guess dad just wants to check in on that now that he has the power of being a Mayor.”
That had made Damon suspicious. Even as he found the first file on the list, he knew that Mayor Y/L/N was definitely checking in on things. The file that he currently held in his hand was an old case file for an ‘Animal attack’. While Damon had killed his fair share of people throughout his lifetime, he knew he wasn’t responsible for that death.
Closing the file, he tucked it under his arm and moved on to the next file. He was definitely going to be keeping a close eye on the new Mayor, if he was looking into old case files. He had just found the next one when he heard a gasp leave Y/N’s lips and files drop onto the floor.
“What is it?” He asked turning in the direction she had went to and tried peering over the boxes. When he couldn’t see her right away, he began looking down each aisle until he found her.
Y/N stood in the middle of the aisle, several case files surrounded her on the floor while she held one in her hand. As he walked closer to her, he could see tears flowing down her cheeks as she looked at the file.
“Y/N.” He said softly trying to get her attention.
She looked over at him, her Y/E/C eyes filled with tears as she did. “This is, um, my mom’s case file.” She said as she held up the file. “My Aunt always told me she had been in a horrible accident.”
“What happened to her?” Damon asked as he looked towards the case file. He could see that she was currently looking through the images that were attached to the file.
“The report says it was an animal attack.” Y/N shook her head slightly, trying to process the words she had read. “What animal does this?” She asked as she handed him the file. “I’ve never seen something rip someone’s head off like that.”
Taking the file from her, he looked down at the images, official statements and the reports. If there was one thing that Damon could tell from any kind of ‘Animal attack’ that Mystic Falls could try to cover up, it was the very thing he was looking at in the photographs. This was done by a vampire, no doubt, and he knew exactly what relative of his that had done it.
