Wanted Connections
Life is simple for the Hawthorn family; new money in an age of extravagance leads to spending frivolously to keep up the appearance of fitting in. Every need is met, every goal reached despite the blood that stains their money. The patriarch of the Hawthorn fortune builds his empire during World War II, manufacturing weapons of destruction and selling out to the highest bidder. When Julian’s father takes over, it is expected that it will pass to his children, especially given the birth and rising achievements of his eldest son.
As simple as things appear, Julian struggles to wrest his father’s attentions towards him as his younger brother, Gabriel, shines brighter with every passing year. He enrolls in Harvard, easy enough to do with a pass of money despite his lagging grades and private tutors, and his path towards becoming a lawyer seems all but written in stone. It is only when he is in the court room, vicious and methodical, that he truly shines. Yet even then he is passed over in favor of the golden child.
Julian is inducted into the society at the tender age of 26, desperate to find connections to propel him forward. It is easy enough to lie, to barter, to smooth talk his way through the crowd to climb his way towards some beacon that might bring about the inheritance he believes is rightly his. Once his father announces that everything he has worked for, everything that he has craved, is being placed in Gabriel’s hands...it is enough to make it snap.
After Gabriel’s death, Julian finds himself growing disillusioned with the entirety of it all. He buries himself in work too dirty to be considered ‘proper’, taking whatever job slides his way long enough to make it on his own. As his father passed more responsibilities onto his shoulders, Julian allowed himself the thought of reforming the society that earned them the very money and power that they had all once craved. The only question that remains is whether he is willing to reach that far to risk everything for the task.
