2: After moving, how did you find your own friends, independent of your boyfriend? I don't have one and I'm not really in a position where I want one, but I'm planning on moving later this year and it's something I'm lowkey worried about.
ah well i’m not actually great at making friends! all my friends that i’ve made since i’ve moved here are from work thus far. i totally lucked out cause the company where i work publishes books and journals, and the philly office was all journals until about a year ago, when they hired some books people (previously all books people are in NYC or the UK or India). so anyway, while it’s a huge office, there’s 9 of us who are super new and we all have the same job title, and all of us are in our 20s. so it was super easy to get close to all of them, cause we’re a small group all looking for friends and having similar life experiences and totally clueless at our jobs (it helps with bonding when you’re all suffering together). and i like game nights, so i just started forcing them all to come to my place for game nights, and now we’re all buddies! (it also helps when there is alcohol - my fourth day of work we all got drunk together at our company holiday party, and that definitely fast-tracked our friendships)
but outside settings where i’m forced to be with people for several hours at a time (aka school and work), i’m not great at making friends. i would suggest the normal stuff that people suggest - join a group activity/club, sports team, Meetup.com group, book club, volunteer, etc. i had planned to do these things, but Covid got in the way. once quarantining is over, i plan on taking some classes at the local Arts uni, so hopefully i’ll make some more friends there, and i’m also planning to join some sort of fitness class/sports team to make friends that way. my boyfriend actually has a million friends and would be better at answering this question - he talks to everyone he meets and has that kind of personality that makes him fast friends with everyone, while i prefer just having a few close friends. he’s really good at making friends with his friends’ friends (wow i said friends a million times there), so that’s another thing you could do - make one good friend, then latch onto their friend group and then you get a bunch for the price of one!
i don’t imaging this was wildly helpful ahah sorry! basically i’d just say it takes time? when i first moved to DC i remember i was super bummed cause for the first few months i hadn’t made any friends, but a few months in that changed and i suddenly had super close friends. so i’m using that same mindset here in philly. it sucks right now cause i just moved to philly a few months ago, and now with covid it’s hard to get friendships going, but there’s always time to make friends! the key is just to get yourself in a place where you see people repeatedly over a long period of time - taking a class or joining a club is really your best bet outside a job/school.
