'Silent All These Years'. Carved by knife into a 12 inch piece of Silver Birch. It's not a spoon, a hairpin or pendant, in fact, it serves no purpose at all. It's my first attempt at carving the human form, something I've wanted to try since I started carving two years ago. I have been really hesitant about posting this as I realise it won't be to everyone's taste and it's not very good but I've come to realise that where fear suffocates creativity, experimentation breathes new life into it. 2-day Spoon Carving Courses. 25th - 26th June and 9th - 10th July. After a fantastic weekend at @thebushcraftshow I've received quite a few requests for some longer courses and workshops so I'm in the process of organising 2 full weekend courses here in Lancashire initially with the hope of hitting the road to do more of them around the UK. Still putting the plans together but the course will include overnight camping (bring your own tent), cooked lunches both days, all tools and materials provided and of course a relaxed evening sat around the campfire. It's great to see your dedication and persistence to your wood carving. Don't ever give up even when everything you try seems to fall apart in your hands; your determination will pay off. And don't worry that your knife handling technique is unconventional, you have to develop your own methods, the methods that work for you. I'm self taught too. The most important lesson you can learn is to understand the wood and work with it, not against it. This will only come with time and practice.

hello!! your pictures and videos are really inspiring to me, i’d like to do things as delicate and intricate as your spoons one day. 

i’m not too cut up about the little thing falling apart, i was having a rough morning and haste makes waste, heheh. one day i’ll give that design another shot, and i’ll have the experience and knowledge and practice to know how to make it last a little longer.

pretty sure that lesson is something that’s going to take me a while to really figure out, but in the meantime, i’m having quite a bit of fun just making a mess. there’s something so satisfying about those little smooth white curls falling away...
