If Your Scene Feels Lifeless, Someone Is Being Too Polite
Stories stall when everyone behaves. Real tension appears when someone:
• asks the wrong question • says something they shouldn’t • notices something uncomfortable • refuses to drop the topic • misunderstands something important • interrupts at the worst moment
Conflict doesn’t always look like shouting.
Couple more options for tension:
They want something REALLY REALLY REALLY bad, but for some reason they can't ask for it -- or can't have it even if they did ask.
They don't notice something that the audience HAS noticed (like in a horror movie when the monster is sneaking up behind the protagonist, or if someone drinks a glass of unboiled water during a cholera outbreak because they don't know about germ theory)
Takes a risk (or otherwise does something they "shouldn't" do) which the audience has to sit through for a prolongued period of time (e.g. slips away from the party to go into the host's private office and rifle through their papers before the guards catch them)
Loses when they thought they were going to win

masks as a signifier of deceit or attempting to hide something is Out. masks being used to represent stepping into one's own identity and not one foisted upon them is the new hit craze
masked character removing their mask in front of someone as a sign of trust: boring, overdone, reinforces the idea of the mask as the "fake" identity and the "real" face as the "true" identity
masked character's mask accidentally comes off in front of someone but they look away to avoid seeing their face as a sign of trust and respect: now we're cooking with gas
Talking to my traumatized friends like “take your time responding and don’t feel any need to cater to my opinion in this matter just tell me the truth about what you feel. Your feelings are valid. ” and it’s about like choosing where to go to lunch.
Y'all do not know how long it took for me to finally realize "telling other people what I think they want to hear" is not the nicest kindest choice for me to always make. And neither do I, because I'm still learning it, but as soon as I do I'll be sure to tell you How Long It Took.
Because, haha, it turns out? Most people actually don't need to be constantly right, always in control, and perpetually being reassured. And they'll feel funny (negative) when you treat them like they do. Because people mostly assume that how you treat them is a direct reflection of how you perceive them, and they will never assume you're treating them that way because of someone who literally isn't currently in the room.
Wild, I know.
In actuality, people already know you have a preference because that is a very normal thing to have. And because you're never as slick as you think you are, you definitely won't fool anyone by pretending you don't. So the actual kindest choice to make is to just be honest about what you want, because most people will feel most comfortable when they know for sure that the decision you've both made is truly a mutual agreement.
Genuinely? Mind-blowing concept. But a very helpful thing to remember.

Ok, it's taken me SIX YEARS to make this. But I did it! It's done! Please watch it!
(No AI used fuck AI)
It's my first animation project, which is why it took so long. I had to learn to animate to make it. It's only a bit over 2 minutes, but I made it the best I possibly could. Please please please watch it. I am so proud of it.
It's a trailer for my first novel- a late YA scifi/superhero book.
Is it absurd to make a fully animated book "trailer" for a book that's been out for 6 years, with voice acting and commissioned music (by the fantastic @plottwiststudios) ? I mean yes. Of course. I'm not even doing this for real marketing purposes because this is a ridiculous thing to do. I don't even really think it'll sell books but the process of making it made me really really happy.
I love my fictional disaster queers, and I love my book, and when I was a kid I thought I'd grow up to be an animator. I've always loved animation, and I really, really enjoyed making something animated myself. I'm really proud of how it turned out.
Please watch it. Please share it.
If it does make you actually want to read the story, you can get it as an ebook, paperback, or audiobook. (the ebook is currently free)
I start my next animation project- a fake anime opening credits for book 3 in this series, starting next month.
Please Reblog!
This is the 85 year old creator of Roger Rabbit:
flamingos flying over tanzania’s lake natron, a salt lake which is home to three quarters of the world’s three million lesser flamingos, as well as toxic multicoloured extremophile cyanobacteria that thrive in water so hypersaline it would strip away human skin. for the flamingos, however, the tough skin and scales on their legs prevents burning, leaving them uniquely free to drink from the near boiling freshwater found from springs and geysers at the lake’s edges. NPR has learned that the Department of Health and Human Services will not be finalizing its most aggressive attempt to end gender-affirming
"The Trump administration is abandoning its most aggressive attempt to end gender-affirming care for youth nationally, according to an official document obtained by NPR.
The document shows that the Department of Health and Human Services will not be finalizing a proposed rule that would have blocked all Medicaid and Medicare funding for hospitals that provide pediatric gender-affirming care."

Palpakin were sucking and fucking right in front of the jedi masters on Coruscant and all they did about it was lecture Anakin to make sure he wouldn't get emotionally attached
VaderSidious were sucking and fucking right in front of the imperial officers on the Death Star
anakin is so relatable for blowing up everyone's lives just to be gay with some evil old dude.
nothing is more tumblr than having a tumblr sexyman wiki and then warn you to not find some of those men sexy because it's problematic

do i have any followers left over from the 2011 homestuck shipping olympics.
i've got a friend in desperate need of access to the dave<3jade visual novel flash game, [s] jade: be the hero. issue is, the source for the swf file on the livejournal entry is from a dropbox link, which is now expired.
to aid in refreshing your memories of a fandom shipping game from fifteen years ago, here's the flash animation i directed for round 2, which has only survived because i uploaded my swf to my personal deviantart account for fame and glory and self-gratification.
thank you.
It would have been easy to let the trolley run its course.
It would have been easy to pretend that there is no lever.
It would have been easy to keep him.
But someone needed to make the right choice.
Someone needed to be brave.
And Ryland Grace is a coward.
———————————————————
She had to make the right choice because Grace is a coward and wouldn’t let her make a good choice. Instead of being able to send a hero off to space, Grace made her send a victim.
What a situation. Everyone betrayed everyone by consistently being the person they never pretended they weren’t.
Stratt really is the embodiment of the hero who would not save you in favor of saving the world.
