Miles Davis – Sketches Of Spain

Sketches of Spainis a studio album by American jazz musician Miles Davis, released on July 18, 1960, by Columbia Records. Sketches of Spain is regarded as an exemplary recording of third stream, a musical fusion of jazz, European classical, and styles from world music.

Reception.

The AllMusic review by Thom Jurek awarded the album 5 stars out of 5 and stated:”Sketches of Spain is the most luxuriant and stridently romantic recording Davis ever made. To listen to it in the 21st century is still a spine-tingling experience, as one encounters a multitude of timbres, tonalities, and harmonic structures seldom found in the music called jazz.”

In a contemporary review for DownBeat, Bill Mathieu hailed Sketches of Spain as one of the 20th century’s most important musical works so far and a highly intellectual yet passionate record.

For Sketches of Spain, Evans and Davis won the 1961 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Composition of More Than Five Minutes Duration. The album was ranked number 358 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Opening my listening day with this classic LP from Gil Evans - “Out Of The Cool” on the Alto Analogue label. It Gil with fourteen other musicians (such as Ron Carter, Johnny Coles, Budd Johnson, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Knepper and others) playing Gil’s arrangements of five tunes, three standards and two Evans originals (Le Nevada and Sunken Treasure). Recorded by RVG, the sound of this reissue is outstanding! Power when needed, and delicacy when called for - and everything in between. The tone and timbre is spot on. The soundstage is wide and deep. But to be honest, while of course you want the best sound (and this Alto Analogue LP is the bomb), you’re buying this for the music which is out of this world. Evans understood better than most how to arrange things, both familiar and unfamiliar, in ways that grab the listener and hold your attention till the end. Miles Davis: Sketches of Spain (180 gram, Sony BMG, 2015) One of my favourite Miles Davis records. Sketches of Spain is such an evocative body of work. In typical Davis fashion it pushed boundaries, because Sketches wasn’t and isn’t a pure Jazz record. Gil Evans and Davis fused the musical movement known as Third Stream and Orchestral Jazz to explore a whole new genre of music. Some critics were not impressed. One wrote: “the recording is something of a curiosity and a failure”. The composer Joaquin Rodrigo (who wrote Concierto de Aranjuez, which takes up almost side 1 of the LP) was also not impressed, however Evans noted that the inclusion of Rodrigo’s piece on Sketches made the Spanish composer “a lot of money” from the royalties that came his way. On the whole Sketches of Spain was lauded and praised, winning Davis and Evans a grammy in 1961. in 2003 the album was ranked 358th on Rolling Stone’s 500 greatest albums of all time.

For me it’s just a beautiful record.
