Hi! Gill here, this ask has good timing. I saw it before Kat signed on for the evening, and this is now my THIRD TIME typing this reply (and SECOND TIME TRYING TO POST IT) as Tumblr keeps eating the draft instead of saving it because it is a Very. Functional. Website. 

But anyway yes, I've been wandering in and out of the Emotional About Dirk Strider Zone for about two months now, take a guess why, and was actually just contemplating starting a reread of DDOTA the same way I started writing my logs for it: Alpha Bitchfest-first.

The eyes are, in hindsight, a bit goofy, but I wouldn't have 'em any other way. I'd always intended for them to stand out, even be a bit off-putting with how in-your-face they are. I saw it as an opportunity to smash one of Homestuck's enshrined Stylistic Laws to tiny bits and saying I pounced on it with glee is an understatement. To say nothing of what the moment represents, with Dirk violently ripping off the symbol of his outer facade and smashing it to bits as he finally lets the emotional dam break. There's only so much you can expect a lonely 16-year-old-kid to deal with, after all.

I keep this picture in my phone library the same way one would a treasured photo of a beloved pet or child.

So yeah, there was no way I was passing up that visual, and if it hadn't been anime eyes, it would've looked something like this:

So... during what is looking to be a long wait for the main version of Tlcstuck to be finished, i'm just gonna ask this. What should I expect from the Director's Cut version?

Sorry to take so long, I promise I'm alive... just trying to survive Senior Year 2: Electric Boogaloo, get ready for my design showcase and Homestuck's 10th anniversary in a month, and also have some kind of gainful employment after I graduate in May, so really, given the circumstances, I think I'm doing an admirable job of hanging in there.

The Director's Cut is our chance to go over anything we weren't totally satisfied with the first time around. The big examples would be [S] Checkmate, [S] Converge and [S] Ascend actually being finished, since we had to put up the heavily abridged versions for time reasons. [S] Creata also has an extended version in the works. For my end, that looks like a lot of re-polishing the artwork from the early comic so it looks a bit more like the part where I finally learned what I'm doing, as well as going over the comic as a whole to make edits for composition, pacing, scene structure, et cetera. For example, the Jane v. Condesce Fight is near the top of my list of scenes to give a facelift. Numerous scenes have panels that were also cut for time reasons that may now be finished. And the oft-maligned opening will also be reworked, featuring one entirely new flash! That will not as crazy complicated as some of the above to make, I promise.

Now with Rose and Kanaya's dialogue in the updates, I could imagine Barbara Dunkelman (Yang Xiao Long's VA) doing Rose's dialogue and Cree Summer (TFA Blackarachnia's VA) doing Kanaya's dialogue.

Gill here, because I might’ve had to google both those names but for Kat this ask might as well be in ancient Greek. Cree Summers as it turns out is one of those voices I heard everywhere growing up but never put a name to! While Barbara Dunkelmann I’d probably know if I was into RWBY outside of like maybe five songs from the OST.

I can’t really say I can see it, but voice HCs are very much a “to each their own” kind of thing, so that’s ok. Me, I’d be lying if I said my mind didn’t default to the voices from Octopimp’s old videos (yes, I’m One Of Those and I am properly ashamed). If we’re talking professional animation VAs, though, I’ve always pictured Rose taking a more Grey DeLisle-ly direction. And though I can’t think of anyone who 100% matches how I hear Kanaya’s voice off the top of my head I gotta say Lori Alan fits better than most. 

(Kat note: Yeah I don’t know any of those voice actors or the characters they play, but I see that Gill is trying to summon bad energy to this blog by referencing a very cursed time in history.)

The panels where Rose puts a flower in Kanaya's hair was very sweet and well done, and i like the way you shaded Kanaya's hair.

Gill here! Thank you. ^^ I’ve been on a flower kick lately and that moment felt like it needed the detailed style... even though it meant I was up ‘til 2 am finishing the update. xux Glad it was worth it.

For some reason, I keep thinking that Sleigher would break in on hit and then be a sword of shattered glass. Painful for everyone involved. I still find the sword hilarious though.

Yeah, Kat thinks that too. And I say that the Sleigher is made out of Fancisantamantium, which is the hardest substance in paradox space. So it’s fine.
