The crown jewel of Drayton Hall’s museum collection is John Drayton’s desk and bookcase. Produced in England during the second quarter of the 18th century, its maker still remains a mystery. This extraordinary object was created from woods gathered from every continent with the exception of Antarctica, ­fitted with elaborate gilt hardware, and ornamented with wooden and tortoise shell inlay. Bonus: 13 secret compartments have been identified along with evidence of an original beveled mirror that once fronted the bookcase. This object is currently on loan to @colonialwmsburg as part of the exhibit, "A Rich and Varied Culture: The Material World of the Early South."
