Tanner Family

From Southern Appalachia, with some of the family living in Northern Alabama out of the mountains

Throughout the past generations, some Tanners have moved to places with high supernatural/magical activity (such as Forsaken Bluff and Chicago), but the large majority still live in Southern Appalachia and Alabama 

Those who live in the mountains live near a spot where the space between worlds is thin. Magic has seeped through that spot and affected the family. Like Gin, much of the family have a supernatural sixth sense, having an uncanny ability to know when they’re needed and to know random details about other people’s lives

There’s a long history of run-ins with supernatural creatures in the Tanner family. They seem to be a magnet for the supernatural

They all speak very openly about their experiences with the supernatural, leading people outside of the family to think they’re kind of kooky

Family history has various explanations for their frequent supernatural interactions. One of Gin’s great uncles said it’s because someone in the Tanner family married a faery. Her great-great-grandmother insisted someone in the family became a human familiar for a witch and things haven’t been the same since. Some say the family was blessed by a kind fae, others say it’s actually a curse from a witch, etc etc

For the most part, people in the family are genuinely nice and would give the shirt off their back to help someone. They have plenty of signs on their property that say things like “trespassers will be shot”, etc. but really they’re welcoming and kind

Don’t fuck with cops or people trying to get in their business. If you just want a friend or a pace you sleep for the night, they’re happy to accommodate that

A hard-working lot but they also love a good time. Reunions are always chaotic and loud 

They make their own moonshine

They’ve never been a wealthy family 

Gin grew up in the mountains, as did her siblings including her sister, Lottie Mae. Lottie Mae married Joseph Coleman and moved out of the mountains to where a few other Tanners live. Lottie Mae and Joseph are Thelma Grace’s parents

Gin misses her family constantly, but something she can’t explain is keeping her in Chicago 

Clementine stays with the Tanners every summer, even if Gin can’t join her for the entire time

As a child, Clementine spends a lot of time roaming in the woods during the summers. She encounters pixies and small fairies that have slipped through from another world

Gin is human, but there are things about her that seem magical or otherworldly.

She has NPC energy in some ways. No matter when her regulars go to the diner, she seems to be there, yet she definitely leaves it. She knows things that nobody could have told her and will offer very specific advice.

With the people she cares about, she always turns up exactly when they need it. Like if a friend was trying to remember what Gin had recommended for getting a specific stain out of clothes, they’d get a call from Gin saying she was just thinking about them and wanted to call and check on how they’re doing.

Gin has never dwelt on any of this. She’s just living her life in a way that seems normal to her. But she’s not the first one in her family to be like this.

The Tanner family has lived on the same plot of land since the early-to-mid 1800s. Turns out that the house was built practically on top of a portal to another land. The magic that seeps through the portal has affected them

Even before that, Gin’s ancestors seemed to gravitate toward experiences with magical creatures. One of Gin’s great uncles said it’s because someone in the Tanner family married a faery. Her great-great-grandmother insisted someone in the family became a human familiar for a witch and things haven’t been the same since. Gin’s grandmother thinks both of those reasons are nonsense.

Whatever the reason, the Tanner family has historically found themselves interacting with supernatural creatures. 

They talk about their experiences pretty openly, especially the older members of the family. People who know the Tanners usually think they’re pretty kooky and don’t believe the stories, but still respect the family because they tend to be wise and give good advice.

Human, a waitress at Pops Diner

Grew up in Alabama and moved to Chicago with her boyfriend in her early twenties. They broke up but she decided to stay in the city. Has a strong Alabaman accent

Not directly involved with anything supernatural but she seems to attract supernatural occurrences

Isn’t fazed by anything supernatural and just takes it as it comes. Ask her and she’ll tell you about the time she shared a beer with skunk ape, or when a unicorn kept eating from her bird feeder, or that time she told off a vampire because he was trying to kill her friend

There’s something a little off about her that’s hard to pinpoint, like she’s not quite a normal human

She seems to always be working at the diner but she definitely leaves it

Loves to gossip, talks constantly and has so many stories to tell, but good luck hearing one all the way through. Her brain is like a pinball machine, all over the place and she interrupts herself mid-sentence

Knows everybody’s business

Always concerned that you aren’t eating enough

Appearance: brown hair dyed blond that’s a little longer than shoulder length, always has her nails done, short and busty

She’s been “working on quitting smoking” for the past ten years

Has a kid daughter named Clementine who is sometimes at the diner after school. Clementine has multiple mythological/supernatural creature phases as she’s growing up, including fairies, mermaids, unicorns, dragons, ghosts, and witches
