     “Status report,” Kira said.      “We just took out the lead ship in the fleet,” Henry said.      “A lot of the other ships are starting to get their sensors back,” Lyle said.  “Looks like the sensor ghost worked though, as a lot of them are firing on each other.”      “Some of them are firing on us though,” Henry said.  “Shields are down to ninety-three percent.”      “A few of the ships are trying to contact us,” Murshidah said.      “Do your best to convince them we’re one of them,” Kira said.  “Gina, do what you can to keep us from getting hit.”      “On it,” Gina said.  “There’s only so much I can do though.”      “Uh, something’s happening at the shipyard,” Lyle said.  “Looks like all of the ship construction bays are opening up, and the ships are exiting.  The ones that are complete enough, anyway.”      “Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?” Kira asked.      “Good thing,” Elizabeth said.  “I mean, mostly.  They’re evacuating because our team succeeded in activating the self-destruct.”      “Well, that’s the main goal of our mission,” Kira said.  “Next up we need to get this fleet as depleted as possible.”      “I have an idea for that,” Rachel said as she came onto the bridge.      “What kind of idea?” Kira asked.      “How long until the shipyard blows up?” Rachel asked.      “Another two minutes,” Elizabeth said.      “Basically I can use our cloaking device to increase the size of the explosion in order to destroy every ship in the area,” Rachel said.  “It’s already set up.  Just give me the order, and I’ll do it.”      “Every ship?” Kira asked.      “Unless any escape into superspace before the explosion,” Rachel said.      “Including our ship?” Kira asked.      “Including our ship,” Rachel said.  “And we can’t go into superspace.”      Kira looked around the bridge at everyone.  “Do it,” she said.

     Kira was fighting the urge to pace.  She knew that as the captain she needed to give off an air of confidence, no matter how she really felt.      “Sending out the pulse now,” Lyle said.  “The Caldore ships are temporarily blind.”      “How long until they can fix that?” Kira asked.      “I mean, it’ll vary from ship to ship, but probably a a minute or two,” Lyle said.  “We’re also decloaking now.”      “Gina, bring us near to the most powerful ships,” Kira said.  “Henry, start firing on them as soon as you can.  But in the meantime, start firing on any ships you can.”      “Yes, ma’am,” Henry said.      “On it,” Gina said.      “The more damage we can do before they can see us, the better off we’ll be,” Kira said.      Kira watched the viewscreen as they moved through the fleet, firing weapons in all directions at a variety of ships.  Then she noticed the ships they hit starting to fire back at them.      “Their sensors are back?” Kira asked.      “Not yet,” Lyle said.  “They’re shooting blind.”      “And it shows,” Gina said.  “I’m having no trouble avoiding them.”      “A few of them are hitting each other though,” Henry said.  “We might actually make it through this.”      “Just keep it up,” Kira said.  “We’re not out of the woods yet, but we’re getting there.”

     “Okay, the sensor pulse is as ready as it’s going to be,” Lyle said.      “What about their sensor sweeps?” Kira asked.      “I’ve been keeping us out of range so far,” Gina said.  “But at the rate they’re expanding, I’ll only be able to manage that for another minute or two at most.”      “Liz, do you want to take the weapons console?” Kira asked.  “We’re almost assuredly going to need to fight.”      “Uh, I’m in the middle of helping the team access the computers in the shipyard,” Elizabeth said.  “And that’s kind of the key thing here, isn’t it?”      “Yeah, it is,” Kira said.      “I can man the weapons console,” Henry said from the back of the bridge.      Kira looked at him.  “Do you know how to use the systems?”      “I’ve been looking them over,” Henry said as he sat down at the weapons console.  “I think I understand them well enough.”      “Okay, sure,” Kira said.  “Lyle, ready the pulse, and let Rachel know to drop the cloak right after.”      “Understood,” Lyle said.      “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the next few minutes,” Kira said.  “But we’ve fought the Caldore and won before, and we can do it again.  I believe in you all.  Let’s do this.”

     Gina sat in her seat at the piloting console, considering the situation they were in.  “Fuck that,” she said.  “We’re not screwed, we are going to get through this.  I told Lex that I would get back home to her, and I don’t intend to let that be a lie.”      “I mean, I want to get home too,” Lyle said.  “But what can we do?  We’re outnumbered fifty-three to one.”      “How many Caldore ships did this one ship take out when they tried invading Earth?” Gina asked.      “Not this many,” Kira said.  “They also weren’t expecting us that time.  This time, they might not know who’s here, but they know someone is.”      “I have an idea,” Elizabeth said.  “What if we send out a pulse to overload the sensors of all the other ships?”      “They’d recover from that within minutes,” Lyle said.  “It wouldn’t give us much of an advantage.”      “But we’re in a Caldore ship ourselves,” Elizabeth said.  “So if we decloak during that time, they won’t know which is us.”      “A much older ship though,” Kira said.  “They’d be able to tell the difference.”      “Maybe not,” Lyle said.  “If we’re a bit more precise about the type of pulse.  We could basically attach a sensor ghost of our ship onto other ships.”      “So when the sensors come back, multiple ships will seem like us?” Kira asked.  “I like it.  Some of them will probably still open fire on us, but some will likely attack each other.  Get it set up.  And Murshidah, be ready to convince any of the other ships that we are a legitimate Caldore ship if they try contacting us.”

     “A Caldore ship just dropped out of superspace,” Lyle said.      “And they’ve already opened communications with the lead ship in the area,” Murshidah said.      “What are they talking about?” Kira asked.      “The sensor scans that the fleet’s been running so far,” Murshidah said.  “Looks like this is indeed a specialized ship, with the best sensors they have.”      “Have they started running scans yet?” Kira asked.      “Yeah,” Lyle said.  “They just started.  And these ones will definitely break through our cloak.”      “Then I’ll just have to keep making sure we stay out of the way,” Gina said.      “I’m not sure that’s going to be possible,” Lyle said.  “The ship’s sensors seem to have this level of sensitivity, even at longer ranges.  It’s just going to keep sending out sensor pulses, and they’re going to get bigger and bigger, until they find us.”      “I’m open to ideas, people,” Kira said.      “Yeah, I got nothing,” Lyle said.  “We’re screwed.”

     “Still keeping us out of the way of their sensor sweeps?” Kira asked.      “As best I can,” Gina said.  “They’re going back and forth over the area though, so they are definitely more than just a little suspicious, and eventually we might not be able to avoid them.”      “How long would it take to get out of their range?” Kira asked.      “I mean, I don’t know their max ranges, but even just the areas they’re concentrating on are pretty big, which is part of how we’ve been able to avoid them so far,” Gina said.  “But the downside is that unless we get our superspace drive working again, it’d be an hour to get out of this area.”      “Then just keep doing your best,” Kira said.      “The situation may be about to become more complicated,” Murshidah said.  “The lead ship just sent out a long range communication to the Caldore homeworld.  They said that they believe a cloaked ship is here, and are requesting…something, some kind of proper noun.  I assume it refers to a class of ship.”      “Something with more sensitive sensors?” Kira asked.      “Possibly,” Murshidah said.  “And they just got a reply.  It’ll be here in half an hour.”

     “Uh, we’ve got a problem,” Murshidah said from the communications station.      “Another one?” Kira asked.  “What is it now?”      “The Caldore are sending out open communications asking for the hidden ship to reveal themselves,” Murshidah said.      “They know we’re here?” Lyle asked.  “That’s not good.”      “Not necessarily,” Elizabeth said.  “They might just be suspecting that someone is, and are testing that theory out.”      “Have their been any high intensity sensor scans that could penetrate our cloaking device?” Kira asked.      “No,” Lyle said.  “Wait, uh, multiple ship ships in the fleet have started doing massive sensor sweeps just now.  They haven’t gone over our location yet though.”      “Are the sweeps following patterns?” Kira asked.      “Yeah,” Lyle said.  “Looks like they’re trying to cover as much area as they can, as quickly and efficiently as possible.”      “Send the information to Gina’s console,” Kira said.  “Gina, try and keep us out of the way of those scans.  I mean, hopefully they won’t penetrate our cloak, but we should take as many precautions as we can.”      “Understood,” Gina said.

Simple Complications #983

     Kira came out onto the bridge as Rachel returned to engineering.  “Any new developments?” Kira asked.      “Maybe,” Murshidah said.  “I’ve been listening into as much chatter between the ships as I can, and it increased as we teleported our team out there.”      “What are they talking about?” Kira asked.      “I think they just detected a slight energy surge,” Murshidah said.  “But they don’t know what caused it yet.”      “I’ve been keeping us moving,” Gina said.  “So even if they go to the exact spot we were at, they won’t bump into us.”      “That’s good,” Kira said.  “Keep that up.”      “We also just got a report back from the team,” Elizabeth said.      “Did they make it to the shipyard okay?” Kira asked.      “Mostly okay,” Elizabeth said.  “Curtis was injured, but he said it’s not too bad.”      “What kind of injury?” Kira asked.      “He didn’t say,” Elizabeth said.  “Which means it probably is pretty bad, but he doesn’t want us to worry.”      “Well, there’s not much we can do for them at the moment anyway,” Kira said.  “So, hopefully it’s manageable.”      “Yeah…” Elizabeth said.  “Hopefully…”
