She watched him clean off his desk for a moment longer before lightly clearing her throat.

“You ready to go?”

Ormewood swept some crumbs off his desk and onto the floor. “Almost,” he called out to her over his shoulder. “Just tidying up.”

“Uh huh,” Faith said. “Surprised you haven’t had a bug infestation yet.”

Ormewood grabbed his phone and stuffed it into his back pocket, then hooked a finger in the collar of the blazer slung over the back of his chair and tossed it over his shoulder.

“I put in an order at Jimmy’s Bean Hut while I was waiting,” he said. He lifted a hand and started ticking off menu items on his fingers. “Fish tacos, nacho fries, churro sticks, and—”

“You eating for two?” Faith teased, patting him lightly on the stomach with the back of her hand.

Ormewood rolled his eyes. “Ha ha, very funny. Skipped breakfast this morning to help Coop with a science project. Hence all the candy and cookie wrappers I had to dispose of.” He waved a hand in the direction of his desk.

“The candy and cookie wrappers you’re forcing the janitorial crew to dispose of for you,” Faith corrected, looping her arm through his bent elbow as they made their way to the elevators.  

“Well,” Ormewood conceded.

“Yeah, buddy.” Faith gave him another pat on the stomach.

Ormewood punched the button for the elevators and then rocked back on his heels. “Water cooler gossip sure was interesting today,” he said, his tone overly conversational.

“Oh?” Faith slipped her arm away from his and tugged the strap of her purse up her shoulder.

“Franklin heard that—”

“Now you know better than to trust anything that comes out of Franklin’s mouth,” Faith said.

“The FBI’s got you tabbed for an open spot?” Ormewood asked, managing to sound somewhat wounded. “Were you gonna tell me?”

Faith tilted her head up toward the ceiling and tossed her hands in the air. “I don’t even know if I’m gonna take the offer,” she said. “I’ve got some time to think about it.”

“What’s there to think about?” he asked.

Faith turned to glare at him. “Not you too.”

“It’s everything you wanted, isn’t it?” Ormewood asked.

Faith rubbed her thumb into her eye. “This is giving me a headache—you’re giving me a headache. I just got a tongue lashing from Amanda because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to take the offer. If I want anymore comments from the peanut gallery, I’ll let you know.”

The elevator doors mercifully slid open and Faith darted through the gap, half-hoping they’d close before he could follow after her and she could dodge the rest of his questions.

No such luck. Ormewood stepped in behind her as the elevator doors slid shut behind them. Faith braced herself for the onslaught of questions she was sure would follow once they were moving.

“So,” he said, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye without moving his head.

It was a strange talent, she thought, to be able to look at people without even looking at them.

“Yeah?” Faith popped her purse open and started digging around for her tin of mints.

“D.C. was all you talked about over the summer,” he pointed out, still not quite looking at her. Ormewood tucked his hands behind his back.

“It was just an idea then,” Faith said, with a soft sigh. “Now it’s getting realer.”

Ormewood looked over at her, eyebrows scrunching together in the middle of his forehead. “Things getting real scares you?”

Faith frowned. “When you put it that way, it sounds kind of pathetic.”

Ormewood’s mouth briefly twitched into an abortive smile. “Nah, it’s not pathetic. It’s super relatable of you,” he said.

“What are you scared of?” Faith shuffled a little closer to him, the soles of her shoes scuffing across the linoleum.

“The cancer coming back,” he said, pulling his mouth into a thoughtful pucker. “My mom popping up in our lives like a bad penny. My sister popping up in our lives like a bad penny. Max and Cooper getting sick. Gina getting sick. You getting—”

“So you’re scared of a lot of things,” Faith cut in, reaching out to take his hand in both of hers. She squeezed gently.

Ormewood exhaled on a laugh. “I guess we’re both pathetic.”

mike favorite ice cream flavor ?

this is a really, really loaded question….my initial instinct is to say mint chocolate chip but i don’t think that’s right. upon further thought, cookies and cream or a chocolate fudge brownie situation. i don’t think mike discriminates, i think he has a sweet tooth and loves all ice cream. i almost even said birthday cake ice cream but i don’t think that’s his favorite. i also think mike eats mostly healthy to stay in shape and only eats ice cream on special occasions and for the most part probably has frozen yogurt.

1. Song of the year?

My Spotify wrapped said it was Fortnight by Taylor Swift, which is fair because I've listened to it a lot, but I think my favourite was Love Me Like You Used To by Lord Huron.

2. Album of the year?

This is tough because it's hard to think about the music I listened to beyond November, but I'd say The Good Witch by Maisie Peters.

11. Something you want to do again next year?

Make new friends, read like I did at the beginning of the year, and travel with my family.
