The winner of the Houston Press Best Dance Act 2015, Gio Chamba, will be delivering an invigorating set of his trademark electro-cumbia hits this Saturday, September 12th at the Untapped Music Festival in Houston,TX (Discovery Green Park/Saint Arnold Stage/ 3:40pm). If you’re in Houston then we recommend you going out to the festival but if you’re not then today is your lucky day!

What’s your favorite song to perform live from this EP?
It would have to be ‘Planeta Cumbia’ because I’m singing, rapping, and playing the guitar. I like to multitask.
Where did you find the most inspiration for your “Chamba” EP?
I found inspiration from many places, inner and outer. Mostly from life events that began taking place about two years ago. From being inspired by my brother and family, to certain South American artists, to being inspired by the hometown Bombón crew, Los Skarnales, and the whole diverse Houston music scene. I was at a mental place where I wanted to create something unique and fun. So I gathered all of that inspiration and created something new and from the heart.
Your EP has a ton of groove and latin flavor, Do you have a favorite instrument that you used on the record?
I love recording in general but I especially love recording percussion instruments like the guiro or timbales!! For me it’s all about the feeling and rhythm.
A lot of people might think that 2015 was my first time performing at FPSF but I’ve actually been performing in it with different groups since it used to be called the ‘Westheimer Block Party’! Chout out to the Free Press! haha
