I found myself searching through photos last night. Looking for kumara leaves for @terriripekacrawford 🤣 I haven't found the kumara leaves - yet - but found some others from moments in time of travel, creativity and food! I was also thinking about things we do with others. Human nature thrives on social interaction and togetherness. And eating kai together. So while I'm enjoying this time of social distancing I look foward to being with others again and having a good catchup! I had a great time remembering through these images. The first two were taken while I was in Vancouver with @aarluk and she brought us some of her traditional food including muqtaaq which was an unusual texture - crunchy and chewy. We cooked it but this is not usually eaten cooked! The other images are of mandala I've created from images of nature, drawings, painted stones and of course my constant inspiration - images captured in my garden. Artist statement: "This mural concentrates on the interaction of plastics and the environment, and ultimately plastics in people. While growing up in coastal towns I have seen how easily litter and particularly plastic rubbish can end up in the ocean, caught on reefs, disturbing wildlife patterns, tumbling around the sea floors and just floating endlessly across the globe. Aquatic plant life and animals have to adapt to this influx of foreign objects in their habitats, shown here by the Hermit Crab walking over the one time use plastic bottle and the Goose Barnacles that have attached themselves to the trash floating on the surface. . Many animals looking for food, eat plastics that have broken down in to micro plastics, mistaking them for creatures found in their normal diet. As the smaller fish are eaten by larger ones the micro plastics transfer from one animal to the next, and many times end up in the fish that are eaten by us. I tried to represent this idea through an image of an Orange Roughy, a fish that has been notoriously overfished globally, literally hooked to an abandoned fishing line entangled on a plastic bottle. The color tones are meant to serve as a mood setting device, the drab muted palette creates an uneasy feel, while simultaneously sets you deep in the chilly New Zealand Pacific.” .
