GK TRIP - SAPPORO 🍺
the outdoor museum was amazing! picturesque and educational (has english labels!), it was a surprise to walk in and recognize gk scenes in the flesh. i took some "selfies" to commemorate my visit 📸
at the village, i ate some of the herring soba sugimoto had, and tried beer from the beer museum that they said were from the old original recipe! id like to assume that maybe ushiyama liked that one...i didnt, it was too strong for me 😂 plus, i forgot to make a list of places to visit in the historical village, and apparently missed a lot 😭😭😭 i'd def want to go back when its warmer because i basically almost froze in the cold and opted not to explore too far...💔 HERE'S A VIDEO THAT LISTS ALL THE GK PLACES REFERENCED IN THE HISTORICAL VILLAGE!
GK TRIP - NOBORIBETSU ♨️ + SHIRAOI 🥬
4th day! took a 2½ hour bus to noboribetsu and saw jigokudani (hell's valley)! noboribetsu onsen (yes that's the town name) really was just a tourist resort that smelled like eggs thanks to the sulfur. i HIGHLY recommend trying out the hot springs here!!!
on the 5th day, traveling to shiraoi from noboribetsu is easy- a walk away from shiraoi station itself. the new upopoy ainu museum finished in 2020 was AMAZING. considering i helped write a paper about ainu back in college, there was a lot of eye-opening facts, artifacts, etc!! i tried some ohau and it was very good.......
with the old museum taken down, unfortunately i couldn't find noda-sensei's drawing of asirpa anywhere! i asked and i think they took it down already- probably because they wanted to focus solely on what was important about ainu culture this time around.
6TH DAY, NOBORIBETSU PART TWO! BEAR PARK!!!! it was a fun place where you can actually kinda interact with hokkaido bears and learn abt them! there was also a small part abt their association with ainu culture.
but for the life of me i have no idea what sugimoto was doing there...
GK TRIP - HAKODATE ⛵
by day 7, my family realized the itinerary i built for them was secretly a gk pilgrimage...soooo we ended up not going to goryokaku and the russian consulate LOLLL while sightseeing, i did get to snap this shot at least! (wink wink)
GK TRIP - ASAHIKAWA 🎖️
2nd day (my bday)! 3 hours from abashiri and 1½ from sapporo. take the route 81 bus to gokokujinja and walk to the hokuchin memorial museum- but careful! they actually ask you to sign something at the desk (and it's a bit hard if you're a tourist/foreigner...) there are only a few english labels, but still! the museum was rich and full of history, still very worth just to look at the artifacts (and even more fun to see the museum have gk references for fans). they have a giftshop and the employee there was very sweet! she did her best to speak to me in broken english while i spoke to her in broken japanese HAHAHA;;; she was wearing the 7th division uniform and straight up had a tanigaki shrine (she said to me word-for-word: "genjiro-chan my love") if you buy a gk doll from there, they get a free loincloth! she sews a lot of handmade things in the shop, so be sure to check them out too! i got myself a keychain of koito's that she made herself (and i regret not buying another thing from there that she made.....) very glad to have met the heroes turned villains of gk 😳🫶
GK TRIP - ABASHIRI ⛓️
day 1! abashiri is 5 hours away from sapporo, so i don't suggesting the 10 hour travel time if you plan on a day trip! the prison museum itself is only a bus or taxi away, and they have english guides! extremely educational, 10/10 the restaurant was unfortunately closed when we were there, but i enjoyed a snack at the gift shop (they had gk merch 😏)
it was an honor to meet the escape king!! 👑
AHHH FINALLY POSTED!!!! I HOPE ITS A GOOD READ, PLEASE ENJOY 🫶✨ i had so so so much fun (but the snow….as a tropical countryman i basically froze 3/4 of the time)
