Born on this day: that effervescent coquette Eva Gabor (11 February 1919 – 4 July 1995), youngest and most talented of the three much-married fabulously ridiculous Hungarian American socialite, elite courtesan and surgically-enhanced glamour puss Gábor sisters. While she’s inevitably described as “famous for being famous”, Gabor was a gifted and sparkling comedic actress of stage, screen and TV (especially in 1960s sitcom Green Acres; seek out the film Paris Model (1953) for further evidence), possessed a distinctive campy voice (she memorably did voice-overs for the Disney films The Aristocats (1970) and The Rescuers (1977)) – and the boss lady behind her own successful wig range! My favourite Eva Gabor memory: circa 1989 when her more volatile older sister Zsa Zsa was famously arrested for slapping a traffic cop’s face, the cable network Nick at Nite promoted their reruns of Green Acres with an ad assuring, “Remember – this is Eva, not Zsa Zsa! While she’s inevitably described as “famous for being famous”, Gabor was a sparkling comedic actress of stage, screen and TV (especially in 1960s sitcom Green Acres; seek out the film Paris Model (1953) for further evidence), possessed a distinctive campy voice (she memorably did voiceovers for the Disney films The Aristocats (1970) and The Rescuers (1977)) – and the boss lady behind her own successful wig range! In between her five husbands, Gabor enjoyed liaisons with director Ernst Lubitsch, actor Glenn Ford – and, reportedly, Marlene Dietrich! (She was also Merv Griffins’ “beard” in later years). Anyway, my favourite Eva Gabor memory: circa 1989 when her more volatile older sister Zsa Zsa was famously arrested for slapping a traffic cop’s face, the cable network Nick at Nite promoted their reruns of Green Acres with an ad proclaiming, “Remember – this is Eva, not Zsa Zsa! Today is a holy day! Lobotomy Room’s Patron Saint, berserk glamour girl par excellence and the punk Marilyn Monroe (or the drag queen’s Marilyn Monroe), Jayne Mansfield (19 April 1933 - 29 June 1967) was born 92 years ago on this day. (To put it in perspective, Mansfield would be the same age as Joan Collins, just a bit older than Brigitte Bardot or Sophia Loren and two years younger than Mamie Van Doren). Revered by the likes of John Waters, Divine, Siouxsie Sioux (who wrote the 1991 song “Kiss Them for Me” about her) and The Cramps (“She’s a role model, a mentor. She had so much aplomb. She’d wear spiked heels and gold lamé to take out the garbage,” Poison Ivy would approvingly exclaim in a 1994 interview), for me sex kitten Mansfield is virtually a sacred figure, the eternal publicity hungry starlet, Hollywood Babylon made flesh, the cooing and squealing hourglass-contoured personification of atomic-era kitsch. Don a ratty blonde wig, drink pink champagne and hug a Chihuahua today in her memory! Pictured: Mansfield in 1964.
