Happy Pride Month! While we’ll be celebrating all month, Iowa City’s Pride Week celebration kicks off next week. Explore Iowa City’s LGBTQ history by exploring this online timeline, “LGBTQ Life in Iowa City: 1967-2010", collaborated on by University Archivist David McCartney and Iowa Women’s Archives Curator Kären Mason on OutHistory.org. The timeline features photos from the Iowa Women’s Archives, University Archives, and private collections. To accompany this amazing resource and to celebrate this upcoming pride week, here are some documents from Prides past from the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Union Records (RG02.0003.18). GLBTAU was the first LGBT+ student group recognized by a university administration.

Happy Pride! In addition to organization papers and group history, the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Union Records (RG02.0003.18) reflects the history of other LGBTQIA+ organizations across the country through newsletters, articles, and more. Materials in the bisexuality section includes newsletters from groups in the 1980s and ‘90s. Many of the challenges discussed on visibility and acceptance within the LGBT+ community still resonate today. Included among news updates, event postings, verse and prose, artwork, and many puns, is a snapshot into the bi-community in the late ‘80s through the 1990s. A highlight of this section is a brilliant non-gender exclusive “Guaranteed Get-Over-It Kit” from a 1998 edition of North Bi-Northwest, a newsletter of the Seattle Bisexual Women’s Network.

The Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Allies Union Records Collection (RG02.0003.018) provides a snapshot of materials from this historic student organization at the University of Iowa. By some reports, this group was the first homosexual student organization officially recognized at a university in the United States. Transferred to the University Archives in 1996, this collection includes publications, event fliers, and materials from the student group throughout the 1990s.
