how do i explain to tumblr dot com that me and some discord friends watched a REALLY, REALLY bad 2002 NZ sitcom called “The Strip” - and we originally did this because Taika Waititi guest stars as a male stripper called Mostin - but while watching we encountered a completely different character who has this entire arc where he realizes he’s a bisexual man and it’s done SO respectfully and SO happily, the man is literally euphoric with queer joy and loudly proclaims “the most wonderful thing’s happened - i’m bisexual!” to his ex wife, and has a very sweet heart-to-heart with her about it.

and that this man is so much more likable than the main character mel (said ex wife) who we are supposed to sympathize with. because this man cheated on her with a guy when they were married, but this woman is so insufferable (like genuinely, she’s bad at her job and a terrible mother and mean to everyone) that you actually end up siding with HIM. his name is glenn btw. we mostly call him “bi dad”

and we’ve been going insane about it. because you can’t just tell people “go watch The Strip” because:

1. you can only find it on vimeo for TWENTY TO FIFTY US DOLLARS. there’s no public pirating website. no torrents. and the episodes are SEVERELY DAMAGED. audio cuts out, visual glitches galore, and they’ve been stretched from standard resolution into widescreen, so everything looks smushed.

2. you can find the vimeo release (in its bad quality) for free in a google drive folder a taika fan made. which is great! ...except that the first seven episodes are missing. because taika is not in them.

3. with either of these methods, you can ONLY access the first season. season two may as well be lost media. supposedly a DVD exists - but it only has the first two episodes of season 1. and it’s a region-locked DVD. and i can’t even find the damn thing.

4. the show is genuinely so bad. oh my god. i completely understand why it is lost media. if you want to see the taika parts you’re better off watching the youtube scene pack. but we want to learn more about bi dad! it’s so exciting to see a bisexual character done well and have them SAY the word.

Bi Dad scenepack for episode 9. In this episode, Glenn reminisces on his ex-boyfriend, Murray, during an awkward dinner with his former mother-in-law (who is trying to convince him to get back together with his ex wife, Mel).

He also assists his daughter, Paige, with boy problems. A grown man tried to pressure her into sex, and Glenn does what any good father would do in that situation: kick his ass.

Bi Dad scenepack for episode 11. Another short one. In this episode, Glenn organizes a birthday party for his ex wife, Mel. Despite this, he actually doesn’t get much screen time. I included snippets of him towards the end where you can see him enjoying the party in the background.

Bi Dad scenepack for episode 1. Here, we get the setup for the entire series. Glenn, an unhappily married man, explores homosexuality for the first time with his personal trainer, Murray. This causes his wife, Mel, to have a mid-life crisis, quit her job, and start a male strip club (hence the show’s title, The Strip).

We also see two nightmare sequences from Mel in this episode. The first scene, where she imagines she’s been killed by an asteroid. And a later scene, where she imagines Murray interrupting she and her husband in bed (which is prompted by her being earning a vacation voucher for a honeymoon suite at work.)

Not showcased in this scenepack, but I feel is notable: Glenn’s daughter, Paige, is supportive of him and his boyfriend, and even muses to her grandmother (the homophobic blonde woman) that the two may get married someday.

Bi Dad scenepack for episode 17. This episode tackles the struggle of bisexual invisibility, exclusion, and struggling to fit in. He volunteers to be the spokesperson for an LGBT sporting event, but he is assumed to be straight and as such, is rejected from this position.

The following day, he attempts to emphasize his queerness by wearing a custom t-shirt and presenting his colleague, Lisa, with a rainbow snack. This time, he is accused of pretending to be gay.

Glenn asks his ex-wife, Mel, for advice. She was the last woman he was in a relationship with, and it didn’t go well. He’s worried that if he pursues Lisa, he’ll make the same mistakes and disappoint her. While chatting, Mel informs Glenn that she recently slept with an old acquaintance from college, Marcus.

Glenn then encounters this man at Mel’s strip club and invites him to get coffee, apparently to ask him advice about sex. When Marcus offers to teach him by getting physical, Glenn refuses, not wanting to put strain on the friendship he has with his ex-wife.

Glenn finally comes out as bisexual to Lisa and she’s receptive, but she assumes that Glenn is sexually promiscuous and experienced, on the basis of his orientation. He clarifies at dinner that he’s only ever had two sexual partners - one woman and one man - and he’s “a novice.” She assures him that this isn’t a problem.

The two of them have sex, and Glenn appears to be relieved that he’s loved and accepted for who he is: a bisexual man that is still learning how to navigate love and intimacy.

Bi Dad scenepack for episode 10.

This one is... a doozy. The entire premise of this episode is to demonize Glenn for being a queer man. He’s framed as evil for temporarily having custody of his daughter, Paige, at HER request and he’s accused at the grocery store of being a predator simply because he’s attracted to men. This causes him to act anxious and afraid around Paige’s boyfriend, worried that he will be perceived as creepy. There’s also a surreal segment where he literally rips his ex-wife Mel’s heart out of her chest and eats it while looking at her evilly, to cement his villainous framing. (This show is... a bit much sometimes.)

It was extremely homophobic and hard to watch, so I fixed it. I shortened some clips, removed others entirely, and changed the order of a few to tell the story from a more respectful perspective.

Now, Glenn is nervous because he doesn’t know if Paige’s boyfriend is homophobic or not. Paige pulls him aside IMMEDIATELY, finds out what’s wrong, and then goes and talks to her boyfriend about it. All of them then gather together for a nice dinner, and Glenn talks about it the following day at the grocery store.
