I need to talk about Honko

So I recently found out about Honko's appearance as a secret boss fight in Look Outside, and I've been completely obsessing over it. lol

So basically at some point in the game you can find a mysterious, unlabeled game cartridge, and if you play it in the meatworld version of your apartment then you get sucked into a nightmarish digital glitch world. While there, you can find a secret area if you know where to look, and there you can find Honko (if you've played and finished the game "Honko's Grand Journey" already).

Now, there are plenty of sad, tragic characters in Look Outside, but Honko is, to me, one of the more tragic ones. It's because Honko comes across as such an innocent and pure character, and he's inexplicably manifested in this horrific, twisted place where this glitchy digital environment is slowly corrupting him and making him lose control of himself. When you first meet him, he gives you a friendly greeting and asks if you can help him find his children, which was his goal in "Grand Journey". It just pains me because he has memories of a world and family that probably don't even exist, and all he wants is to be reunited with his children and be happy. And the way he cries and apologizes during the fight just tears me up inside. :(

It's just really fucked up that even fictional characters from peoples' childhoods aren't safe from the corruption of the visitor. Honko was just inexplicably spawned into existence, complete with memories of a saccharine world and a loving family, both things he'd never be able to see, and he materializes in a living nightmare that slowly corrupts and degrades both his mind and body. He was literally brought into existence only to suffer...

I just want to hug and comfort this poor guy so much!

And the thing about all this is that I'm pretty sure Honko's appearance in Look Outside is just supposed to be not much more than a fun, cheeky easter egg that pokes fun at creepypastas like Sonic.exe, but it's just one of those things that once I started really thinking about it the more sad and fucked up it is. Obviously I'm not trying to fault the game devs, it's a really cool secret encounter added to the game, my brain just obsesses over silly things a lot.

I also love his boss fight music. It's a track that brings to mind old, nostalgic, fun video games, but also sounds somewhat melancholy. It's beautiful.

Misnull, the Glitch Ghost

So @titleknown had this neat idea of making new characters to release into the public domain on public domain day because its not just about old things that become public domain but also about the promotion of open culture in general. This one is inspired by the famous missingno glitch but I got the idea of making a lil ghost that appears out of your gameboy. i left the ending and origin of this being vague. the text below is public domain so feel free to add on if you want or use it as a launchpoint for your own things.

I don't remember this story too well as it my memory of this time in my life tends to be foggy for some reason, so the details may not be there but the important bits are clear as day to me.

For christmas 2004 I got a video game for christmas, it was a copy of ị̶͝ň̴̺f̵̯͆o̶̡͐r̷̩͝m̵̰͆a̴̠͂t̴̳̃i̷̻͌o̴̬͝n̵͔̚ ̷̑ͅm̶̨̉ī̴̝s̴̘̏ṣ̷̛i̵̫͠n̸̻͌g̷͎͐ for the gameboy advance. I don't remember much about the game just that I really wanted it because my friend had been hyping it up at the time. I believe it even had an anime I used to watch but that might have been a different one.

Following christmas I spent most of my time on my gameboy advance sp fixed to the game trying to beat it although I recall there being a steep learning curve with it which was difficult for me to get over, especially as a 12 year old with only rudimentary grasp on the English language

I got to the part where the player character was in front of a large gate, almost 5x the size of the player sprite, behind it was nothing, it was simply a door in the middle of a green field. Suddenly the cartridge started to rumble causing the whole console to do the same.

Then suddenly the gate opened, two large claws pushed themselves out digging into the dirt and I could see glowing dots.

Despite this being a gameboy advance game the graphics were surprisingly detailed and with the foggy atmosphere of the surroundings and the rumble feature it made for an intense experience there in the late evening in my room. I legit got scared but I couldn´t look away.

This next part, I know it will be hard to believe and this will be labeled either the misremembering of a childhood nightmare or the crazed ramblings of a madman but I swear on the life of my children that it did happen.

The Gameboy Advance lit up so bright that it shook me out of my daze as I had been transfixed on the screen trying to make out the scene the only thing making that possible at the time being a light addon I had plugged into the link cable port.

While its possible nowadays to mod your GBA to be backlit, this was 2004 and despite not being the original model it was lighting up brighter than my little light addon. It was so bright it irritated my eyes for a bit and i had to block it with my hand.

Suddenly i saw a ghostly figure, similar to cartoony ghosts appear out of my gameboy. I was so freaked out that i threw it to the end of the bed which dragged the ghost with it.

The ghost itself wasnt scary just having a silvery face which i didnt seem to grasp if it was its face or a mask or what. Their body if you can even call it that was purple with its hair being jagged geometry

The ghost leaned forward, almost like it was inquisitive, just studying me as I sat up at the other end of the bed with fear plastered on my face.

Shoutout to @borderlineanders for recommending this to me, it’s The Princess the tragic; unfinished glitch character from the gamepasta of the same name!

While it is a gamepasta, it does actually do quite a bit new with the “formula” so-to-speak. It uses an original entity with its own mythology, goes into the gamedev-history from which weird gaming rumors like The Princess derive for its structure and uses a lot of the communal aspects of weird gaming rumors that don’t get seen a lot in such stories.

And, what’s most fascinating of all, unlike other monstrous game entities in such stories, the more one reads it, the more one realizes that she’s perhaps the greatest, most tragic victim of this story.

It’s funny, I hadn’t read it before now, so it’s eerie how well the theme of her being such a victim fits. Almost as if she pursues us still. Tho, it also reminds me of an idea I had for a new version of Princess Lana in a hypothetical Captain N reboot, so it’s probably a coincidence.

The revelation of her as a “living meme” in the end is a bit cliche, at least as far as Creepypastas go, and I like to think the narrator is wrong and there’s something far stranger afoot.

My hypothesis: She looks not just for her story, but for a world to live in. A world where she can exist, the world she can live in without breaking. And really, perhaps her myth is the closest chance she’s had at finding a home, for what is myth but building a world out of story...

Also, while looking about, I found out the writer of this pasta has a Tumblr; at @rocketlex. They’re working on other game projects and they seem like a pretty cool parson, so go check ‘em out!

And I will close by saing, anyone wanting to see how to write a good gamepasta should take a look at this and note what it did differently from the other two big ones, the NES Godzilla Creepypasta and Ben Drowned, and how one could innovate and do something different in their own way...

New Redesign possibly? I wanted a more armor look for when SkyBound would take on the name “The Guardian” as a crime fighting galactic protector! (This character is not the last member of the protectorate in any canonical sense BTW)

I wanted it to be slick, and stick with the bright colors of the cape. Ill probably re-do the line-art of my current WIP to incorporate the armor :)
