26. A very cheesy date; 35. “You wanna bet?”

For Red and Green, a “date” could mean a lot of things: watching old movies in Green’s apartment, engaging in a battle once the Viridian City Gym had closed for the night, grabbing a casual meal at any of their favorite restaurants. What a date didn’t mean was fancy clothes, white tablecloths, and soft classical music playing among clinking silverware. Which was probably exactly why Red teasingly commented one day, “You wouldn’t know what to do with yourself on a real date!”

Green just raised his eyebrows and asked, “You wanna bet?”

“Oh, no!” exclaimed Red, who knew exactly what it meant when Green got a competitive look like that in his eye.

Two weeks later, Red returned from his job at Oak Research Labs to find Green waiting for him, dressed incongruously in a sharply pressed, pale gray suit with a green bowtie. Red didn’t know whether to laugh or blush, and ended up doing both when Green announced, “Get dressed. You may not have anything as fabulous as this, but some dress pants and a button-down shirt’ll do fine for where we’re going.”

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

Green’s Pidgeot flew them to Vermilion City, where a small ship had docked for the evening, offering a “dinner cruise” to Kanto’s upper crust. Red found it hard to keep from giggling at the discovery that his boyfriend had booked them an intimate table for two, complete with candelit ambiance and a live pianist and menus written in fancy script.

The funny thing was, Green didn’t seem to be out of his element at all. Actually, he appeared to be having a blast playing the role of a confident, elegant gentleman.

When Red asked, Green replied, “You get used to fine dining when you live in Kalos for any length of time, especially in Lumiose City. So maybe I’m a little more adept at ‘real dates’ than you thought, huh, pal?” And he winked in a way that made Red giggle and blush all over again.

Dinner was pretty good, but, they both agreed, not as good as the restaurants that they usually frequented. Still, Red privately thought that the night had been worth it...if for no other reason than getting to see Green in that snappy suit.
