You find these tree cones everywhere around the holidays. They are the cutest thing to decorate with as they add a nice, filling, touch to your holiday decor. They usually cost about $10 – $18 to buy (each), so I decided “why not make them myself this year?”
Turns out they’re actually quite easy to make :)
Start by making simple paper cones – Try making different sizes. I decided to make three cones (7.5″, 10″, 12.5″).
Wrap the paper cone with plastic wrap and tuck it into (fold into) the bottom of the cone. The plastic makes it much easier to take the thread cone off once the glue dries.
Your cones should look something like this:
Now that you have your cones wrapped and ready, start brushing some mod podge on it – I recommend doing this in segments. It’s much easier and less mess.
Start wrapping the cotton thread around the cone. Make sure you go over the starting point multiple times to secure the thread. Add more glue as you move down the cone. Once you’re done wrapping, cut the thread and place the end under some of the existing thread to secure it.
Let it air dry for about 15 mins, then gently brush some mod podge on the whole cone. Once again, let the cone air dry. Note: You can use a hair dryer to dry the cone – Make sure you use cold air NOT hot.
Once the glue is completely dry, unfold the plastic wrap at the bottom and remove the paper cone.
Gently start pulling the plastic wrap. I used a wooden stirrer to pull the plastic away from the thread and it worked like MAGIC!
You can leave your cone as it is, or you can spray paint it and add some glitter.
Hope you enjoy this simple DIY :)
