the couple is in their line of vision readily. mom and dad watching fondly on. that's not his thoughts ! three different capitolites compared haymitch to a father tonight however. it's so tone-deaf it's laughable. " his chuckle almost sounds fond. they're too similar. even with katniss trying hard to protect her loved ones ( which haymitch failed to do himself twenty-five years ago, ) her moments of sincerity tickle him. at times, it's difficult keeping the escort out of the loop. not in terms of protecting her, no that's simple. but they spend so much time with one another, it almost feels deceitful.

the victor begins to turn his head, no longer looking at the pair. he's had his fill of peeta's charming smile and his wife's artificial one. why read the story when the end has been revealed ? at the moment, the pair can handle their own especially together. instead, he'll just talk about them. " peeta's softer for that. did you give him note cards too ? he probably knows them front and back. " not that he needed to. it seemed the blonde could turn any stranger to a friend with quick-wit alone.

the night is incredibly young. capitolites were still arriving by the dozens, the room becoming ever more crowded. expensive perfume and cologne leaves the air stuffy. haymitch still had a few laps to run before he would allow himself to unwind. his thoughts on the hunger games aside      maybe he felt slightly revitalized in campaigning for tributes. ( his pride will deny it, as will his unparalleled distain towards the government. ) though if he overhears another pompous elite comment wow district twelve has three victors now, abernathy might implode. 

and when effie trinket suddenly makes her way into his vision, all colorful, extra, and ebullient, haymitch makes his way over. arms are crossed as he stood beside her. across the room were the two victors of the seventy-fourth hunger games. he hadn’t seen much of katniss and peeta tonight, but the newlyweds’ popularity made for a turnstile effect at events like these. “ what happened to the good old days of throwing new mentors and escorts blindly into the deep-end ? ” 

it’s an unfunny joke from the older man but smirk still lands on his lips. none of what they’re showcasing can be accredited to him though ; all he provided was aid in sponsorships and strategy during the games. whether it was the escort’s meticulousness, the blonde’s ability to charm a sack of potatoes, or the girl on fire’s drive to keep her family alive, the room was captivated by the pair. “ they’re doing really well. they compliment one another. ” he’s just thinking out loud now.
