Runway Talk, with Rachel Kernic
A big thanks to the GLITZBURGH team for helping to get Reflect noticed. This past Sunday, May 22, some Reflect garments got a chance to rock out on the runway at the Glitzburgh: Glamour Meets Giving, A Black and Gold Affair fashion show. The show featured some great local designers/boutiques (two from Kent State University, where our intern studies! GO FLASHES!). The show was held at Whim in Station Square as a fundraiser benefiting the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. It was a night full of Pittsburgh Fashion, and even some Pittsburgh celebs! James Harrison was one of the "highlighted models" for the show! (Another shout out to KSU, Harrison's Alma mater!).
I (Lauren the intern) had a chance to do an informal interview with Rachel Kernic, one of the founding mothers of Gliztburgh. First of all, I wanted to know how she got involved! Turns out, Ms. Kernic and Anna DeLattre came up with the idea for Glitzburgh while watching the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show and later brought on Dom Janidas. It’s amazing how inspiring fashion can be.
We all know Pittsburgh isn’t the most fashionable of cities, so, I asked Rachel if it was hard to generate a crowd interested in/knowledgeable of fashion? She said, “It’s not exactly hard when people know it is for a good cause. But we also plan Glitzburgh in hopes it will help Pittsburgh get into the fashion market more. We also theme it around black and gold and Pittsburgh has a lot of pride in their colors”.
When choosing which boutiques/designers to feature in the show, Rachel says, “We look for people who are on the same page as us when it comes to supporting a good cause... And have a great sense of fashion of course. Different things, stuff you don't see every day”.
Ms. Kernic commented that each year about six months of planning goes into the show and that, “This event were our dreams becoming a reality, last year was good, but this year was even better”. Many of this year’s models came from the Docherty modeling and talent agency, as well as, models from last year’s show and friends of the producers.
I too have a love for the runway production segment of the fashion industry, so, I asked for any advice Rachel could offer me. She responded by saying, “Never doubt yourself. Be passionate and drive about what you want to do, you can do anything as long as you believe. Being organized and always keeping a smile on your face does help too :)”.
The best of luck to Rachel, Anna, and Dom in the future, maybe we will work together one day! Thanks again to the whole Glitzburgh team for doing such an amazing job and helping get Reflect more exposure. We are all looking forward to seeing more from you guys around the city!
