I've seen a lot of stuff in passing about Hugo Schwyzer on my dash lately, and finally looked into it myself just now. All I can is, wow. Just, wow.
While the focus is on one questionable dude and his work in the feminist blogosphere (and its many light-skinned feminist defenders?), this feels really relevant on a diy community level, too. I've talked with friends before about guys in bands, organizing events, and having to fight to keep people who make you feel uncomfortable from invading your space and using your credibility. This piece points out how racism, ideas about safer spaces, and confusion on what an ally really is allow Schwyzer to pass himself off as a 'redeemed' abuser and predator. Failure to address racism, and issue of cooptation of safe(r) space and ally rhetoric seem really super-relevant to the diy/social justice/punk/etc. community.
