What Is Global Entry & Do You Need It?
If you are a frequent traveler who journeys quite often outside of the U.S., there is a fairly high chance you’ve heard of Global Entry. But what exactly is it? Well, according to the official CBP site it is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. In other words, it allows you to enter the U.S. through the use of an automatic kiosk instead of waiting in those long customs and immigrations lines at the airport.

How to Breeze Through Airport Immigration Lines
The last thing anyone wants to do after a long international flight is to stand in an hour-long line at U.S. Immigration. There would be hundreds of travelers ahead of you and only a handful of immigration officers to process passports. Thanks to Global Entry program. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection offers this program for frequent international travelers. This would allow you to avoid immigration lines completely and proceed directly to a designated kiosk or entry line. You will then be able to collect your luggage at the baggage claim and quickly pass through customs without the need to fill out a Customs Declaration Form. In my first few uses of Global Entry, I was amazed at how quick the process is.
Enrollment in the Global Entry program is available to U.S. citizens who are able to pass an extensive background check. The program carries a $100 fee, and membership is valid for 5 years. Enrollment is conducted in two stages. The first stage is completed online, where you enter vital details and pay your enrollment fee. If you pass the background check, you’ll be able to schedule an interview with a CBP officer. During the interview, the CBP officer will ask you a variety of questions, primarily focusing on your travel history and occupation.
While Global Entry helps you get into the country fast, TSA PreCheck helps you get to the gate just as quickly. PreCheck is a form of expedited screening, where some of the modern security screen rules don’t apply. Members have their own dedicated lines. You can keep your jacket, shoes, and belt on, leave your laptop in the bag, and walk through an old-school metal detector. It is a great way to save time and it takes out the stress of traveling.
Even if you travel only a couple of times a year, Global Entry and PreCheck access are worth the cost in order to avoid long lines. I highly recommend it!
