mute is the third album by El Khat, the Berlin-based, Jaffa-raised Yemeni band. El Khat comprises multi-instrumentalist El Wahab, percussionist Lotan Yaish, and organist Yefet Hasan. It has always been faithful to its heritage. At the core of El Khat’s sound are raw percussive textures and melodies inspired by Middle Eastern pop. Despite its polyrhythmic grooves and homemade Yemeni instruments, mute is surprisingly minimalistic yet rich in humanitarian messages. Tracks like “Intissar” and “Zafa” hope for reconciliation among people who are segregated by geopolitical tug-of-war. Striking, impactful, and a must-listen.

Brooklyn Gypsies - “Sin Fronteras”

The Brooklyn Gypsies have just released their latest album Sin Fronteras. The title track is my favorite one because it’s such a great tune for the world music lovers! The Brooklyn Gypsies are a group of NYC based musicians/producers whose creative influences draw from the constant shifting of an ever changing urban sociopolitical landscape while retaining their unique cultural backgrounds through what has come to be recognized as “gypsy” music.  

The group's sound is a fusion of Mediterranean, North African, and Arabic themes with electronic, dancehall and dub reggae. The term "gypsy" was incorporated into the band name representing the nomadic spirit and way of life within this musical journey
