I respect John Sexton. Not because he gives hugs to anyone who asks, not because he's the President of NYU, and definitely not because he's basically an international icon. I respect him because of the way that he connects with people. I was fortunate enough to be in one of Sexton's classes, and couldn't believe how much he opened up to all of the students. He told us, in his usual anecdotal fashion, about the hard decisions that he had to make in life, about the death of his wife, and, among many other things, about what motivates him. I rarely encounter these types of people, and can't help but respect them for putting it all on the table. I know that many people dislike John Sexton, and many people think that he's a selfish tyrant, but it's honestly hard to hold these preconceived notions when you meet and speak with the guy, one-on-one. He's someone who does what he needs to do, and I know dozens of students, if not hundreds, who have positively benefited from the decisions that Sexton has made as NYU President. The Global Network University is literally revolutionizing higher education and allowing thousands of students to meet, learn, and collaborate all over the globe. What reasons can you give for all of that to not be worth it? Without Sexton's leadership, I can hardly imagine any of this coming to fruition.
