80th Golden Globe Awards: A Night of Recognition Amid Controversy
The Golden Globe Awards are an annual awards ceremony honoring excellence in film and television, organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The ceremony has been held for the 80th time in history, but this year’s edition was particularly notable due to the racial exclusion scandal that has plagued the organization in recent times.
In 2021, a story by the Los Angeles Times revealed that none of the 87 members of the HFPA were Black, which prompted widespread criticism and calls for change. As a result of the scandal, several high-profile individuals and organizations, including actor Tom Cruise, returned their Golden Globe awards, and NBC, the network that traditionally airs the ceremony, opted not to broadcast the 2021 ceremony.
In response to the scandal, the HFPA pledged to take steps to promote greater inclusivity within the organization. This has included efforts to recruit a more diverse group of members and increase transparency about the organization’s finances and governance. The association has also pledged to increase funding for scholarships and grants for underrepresented groups.
While the HFPA’s efforts at reform are ongoing, many in the industry have called for more to be done to address the underlying issues of race and representation in Hollywood. Some have also called for a complete overhaul of the awards ceremony, arguing that the Golden Globes lack credibility due to the HFPA’s history of controversies.

Most Prestigious
Despite these challenges, the Golden Globe Awards remain one of the most prestigious and widely-watched events in the entertainment industry, and many talented actors, directors, and writers continue to be honored at the ceremony every year.
However, it will be important to see if the association can get a hold of the situation and actively make changes so that the awards ceremony can be truly inclusive and honoring the talents of all people. The night began with host Jerrod Carmichael taking the stage and explaining how he came to be the host, with a quip about being Black and a detailed account of his decision-making process.
The trophy distribution then began, with several notable films and performances taking home awards. The Banshees of Inisherin, a tragicomedy set on an Irish island, led all movies with eight nominations and ultimately took home the best comedy film trophy, while Colin Farrell won in the best actor in a comedy/musical category. Writer-director Martin McDonagh also took home the best screenplay award.
Another film, Everything Everywhere All at Once, also fared well, with Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan both winning in the best actress and best supporting actor in a series, limited series, or motion picture made for television categories respectively.
The Fablemans also came into frame, with the film winning best drama film and Steven Spielberg winning best director……Read More

Streep, Watson to bring activists as Golden Globe guests
LOS ANGELES/January 07, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) — Meryl Streep, Michelle Williams, Emma Watson and Amy Poehler are among the eight actresses who are planning to bring gender and racial justice activists as their guests to the Golden Globe Awards Sunday evening in an effort to shift the focus back on survivors and solutions, and away from perpetrators of sexual misconduct. Streep will walk the red carpet with Ai-jen Poo, the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Williams with Tarana Burke, the founder of the “me too” movement and Watson will bring Marai Larasi, the executive director of Imkaan, a Black-feminist organization. Poehler’s guest is Saru Jayaraman, president of Restaurant Opportunities Centers, Shailene Woodley is being accompanied by Suquamish Tribe member Calina Lawrence, Laura Dern is walking alongside Monica Ramirez, a supporter of worker-led movements, and Susan Sarandon is bringing Rosa Clemente, a political commentator. Nominee Emma Stone is also taking tennis champ and advocate Billie Jean King, who the actress portrayed in the film “Battle of the Sexes.” In a statement Sunday, the advocates say they were inspired by the Time’s Up initiative, which launched Monday with the backing of hundreds of Hollywood women, like Streep, Reese Witherspoon and Shonda Rhimes. The initiative vowed support for women in the entertainment business and beyond, from janitors to health care workers. “Each of us will be highlighting legislative, community-level and interpersonal solutions that contribute to ending violence against women in all our communities,” the advocates’ statement said Sunday. “It is our hope that in doing so, we will also help to broaden conversations about the connection to power, privilege and other systemic inequalities.” The statement says that women of color should be at the center of the solutions. “We want to encourage all women — from those who live in the shadows to those who live in the spotlight, from all walks of life, and across generations — to continue to step forward and know that they will be supported when they do,” the statement continued. Many attending the Golden Globes will also be wearing black to protest sexual harassment. Mark Ruffalo tweeted Sunday that he would also be wearing black “in solidarity with the men and women asking for respect and equality.” He encouraged others to tweet themselves wearing black with the hashtag #TimesUp.
