ok last one. very surreally sincere documentary about the Hughes Glomar Explorer and it’s polymetallic nodule science projects. unclear whether Sikorsky documentary producers knew this was a CIA front and made the docu as propoganda or actually were oblivious and made an otherwise apolitical and fairly interesting science documentary
Whether it comes from government spokespeople or celebrity publicists, the phrase “can neither confirm nor deny” is the perfect non-denial denial.
On the topic of Glomar, this radiolab episode from 2019 describes project Azorian and the origins of the Glomar response. Also talk to former CIA agent David Sharp about his book on the project (https://kansaspress.ku.edu/978-0-7006-1941-2.html)
great work guys
Glomar response
In United States law, the term Glomar response (aka Glomarization or Glomar denial) refers to a “neither confirm nor deny” (NCND) response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. There are two types of instances in which a Glomarization has been used. The first is in a national security context, where to deny a request on security grounds would provide information that the documents or programs which the requester is seeking indeed exist. Glomarization is also used in the case of privacy
