Whispering from Spring Awakening (This is the Rise cast version, though.)
I should say, I’m going to analyze this as though it’s Isira singing it. It reminds me that much of her.
The first part of the song is eerie and quiet, and I think it’s reminiscent of the times Isira has been left alone, feeling lost and trapped.
Whispering... Hear the ghosts in the moonlight. Sorrow doing a new dance Through their bone, through their skin.
Listening— To the souls in the fool's night. Fumbling mutely with their rude hands... And there's heartache without end...
And then in this next little bit, she’s almost mocking her father’s opinions. She knows he thinks she’s done something abhorrent, but she knows it’s not true.
See the father bent in grief, The mother dressed in mourning. Sister crumbles, And the neighbors grumble. The preacher issues warnings...
History... Little miss didn't do right. Went and ruined all the true plans— Such a shame, such a sin.
The next bit makes me so emotional to think about. The music picks up and there is so much more power behind it. I think here, Isira gains a bit of confidence. She knows she’s done nothing wrong, and she’s relishing in the memories of her times with Blythe.
Had a sweetheart on his knees, So faithful and adoring. And he touched me, And I let him love me. So let that be my story...
She quiets back down as she comes back to the present reality. Even in the grief of loss, of being trapped, she still has this tiny fragment of hope that things will be better.
Listening... For the hope, for the new life— Something beautiful, a new chance. Hear, it's whispering, There, again...
