Glux
Glux is an awesome abstract game for 2-4 players, however all my experience with it is as a two-player game.
Players start with one chip on the board. On your turn you draw a chip from your bag. Each chip is like a die where the two opposite sides add up to 7. Then you place that chip, either side up, a number of spaces away from any of your chips already on the board, equal to the pips of the pre-existing chip.
So if you had a chip on the board with 3 pips showing, you can place the new chip exactly three spaces up, down, right, or left from that. As more chips are placed, you have more options. The only restriction is you can’t “jump” over existing chips.
You can however cover up a chip if you land on it. But once a chip is covered, it can’t be covered again.
The goal of the game is to have dominance in the light blue zones on the board. Once all chips have been placed, add up the pips of each player zone by zone. Whoever has the most scores points. And whoever has the most points after all the zones have been scored wins.
It’s an incredibly simple game with a lot of great decisions. Do you put down a chip on it’s 1 or 6 side? A 1 means you can lay more chips nearby, but a 6 gives you a better value in trying to take over a zone. And a 6 may not give you options for laying other chips at all.
I love this game and will happily play it any time. The board is double sided: one for 2 players, the other for 3-4. While I haven’t played it 3-4 yet, I’m sure it’s still fun if a little more chaotic. If you like abstract games, check it out!
