Twitter is "For The Birds"
According to Webster, journalism is defined as the researching, reporting, and writing of news and information that appeals to popular taste and is then presented through the media. If this definition applies, social media including Twitter is definitely an element of journalism.
But what role exactly does Twitter play? And is Twitter by itself really journalism?
Dan Patterson of ABC News Radio summed it up in his Tweet, “It’s the wrong question. Twitter is a tool, the web is a medium, and journalism is an action."
Most agree that Twitter is a tool that can be used to spread journalistic content, not journalism in itself. It's benefits are a large interacting community with trending topics to highlight on current events. It's limitations are in space as 140 characters can hardly qualify as journalism. As well as in validity because there is no real way to make content and sources credible.
