SOPA, PIPA, and other acronyms that make me angry.
The problem with legislation like this is that no one reads the fine print. Parents or organizations hear a few key phrases like "It'll make the internet safer for our kids" and "It'll protect America's intellectual property" and then they're convinced. Truth is, if these bills were passed the internet as we know it would cease to exist.
SOPA and PIPA would allow the government to shut down entire domains if they found one blog or page that contained copyrighted material. This would be the end of mass image hosting sites like Flickr or Photobucket as well as mass video sites like Youtube and Vimeo. Even widely accepted search engines like Google are targeted in these laws and would be modified to support this new free of freedom internet.
Think about how this very class would be effected by this law. We wouldn't have access to any of the educational videos we watched, Tumblr and Twitter would both be shut down, and Social Media as a whole would be affected. The internet is one of the greatest resources of our generation. It's important to educate yourself and those around you that a vote for PIPA or SOPA is a vote against freedom.
