TW mentions of bullying
Nothing could ever be like home to Re Mi. When they were younger, they explored, going to places her friends would always talk about but no place could ever compare. Perhaps because she was truly a homebody. But those who knew her would know it was solely because of the forest and the excess to nature they possessed. Growing up Remi took every opportunity given to tag along on her father’s work adventures in Cady Hills Forest. By the age of twelve, she had already explored half of the forest, with her father’s watchful eye, and had dreams of one day being able to say they touched every part of Cady Hills. Though these dreams, their parents feared, spun off from a more serious reason -- bullying.
As the days of middle school closed in and high school began, it became clearer that Remi wasn’t the most popular person in school. From what the Zhaos knew, Re Mi would follow in their brother’s footsteps which entailed good grades and a fairly active social life. However despite expectations, Remi was rather the opposite. Instead they preferred the company of animals, insects and the forest floor as opposed to a room of teenage girls giggling and gossiping. By their sixteen birthday, Remi had already adopted a rather genderless look, getting even more stares from wandering eyes at school. Soon they were skipping classes and spending as much time as they could before sundown in nature, bringing a few friends along from time to time.
By the time they graduated high school, Remi was proudly a non-binary to all those who mattered to them. They found comfort and happiness in this genderlessly defined option, giving them more space to breathe and exist without the confines of female expectations. But it was more than that to Remi -- it meant finally putting a name to something they couldn’t for so long.
Everything after high school felt like some sort of fated path. They stuck around in Stowe while others who were desperate to get out, did everything they could to make their way into the world beyond the little town. Remi instead took up a few part time jobs here and there while getting an associates degree at the nearby community college. Talks of going to a university never went anywhere when it came to the Zhaos’ second child. Nothing really seemed to spark and nothing could make them happy as much as being out in nature did. After earning her associates in environment science, Remi applied to become a park ranger for Cady Hills Forest.
Being a park ranger was the most expected thing to happen. Despite their parents’ talks and concerns, Remi pursued this career head-on and has dedicated the majority of their time to their work. While her father is proud to be working with their kid, they are vocal about how he doesn’t want to see Re Mi stuck in this town forever. Remi normally tunes out after a while and just enjoys the company whether these talks happen on their patrol runs or at family dinners.
At the moment, Remi is content with her life as antisocial as it is at times, not caring much about the dating world or what life is like outside of Stowe, Vermont.
