Emery Nicole Birch was born on December 22, 1996 on a rainy day in Medford, NJ. Her family was the basic white-picket-fence type of american dream. Something that a tv network would jump on to make a sitcom about.
She had the closest relationship with her younger sister. Having a three year age gap, Emery always pretended her sister was her own little baby doll and âhelpedâ her mother tend to her.
With her mother being a wildlife biologist and her father working in pharmaceuticals, Emery was never deprived of anything. From the materialistic standpoint, she always received what it was that she wanted - though she never asked for much. on the other hand, the intellect gene was strongly evident within the young girl.
Emery understood more than what she should have to where she had numerous opportunities to be put into prestigious/private institutions even though she was only in pre-k, but her parents made her stay where she was - ignoring her teacherâs suggestions. They wanted her to live a normal life, with kids her age; no plans of having her skip grades in the future or jumpstart kindergarten now. Friends were never an issue, though emery radiated a friendliness - she always kept close to three specific individuals. This marked her understanding of quality over quantity, even at her age.
It was her 5th birthday, when her family took her to the aquarium. Tt was tradition at this point: Emery having a fascination for marine life. Towards the end, they always have you exit through a gift shop and emery was satisfied with her otter plushie. Doing what almost every kid does, she wanted to wait in the car until her indecisive sister was done picking her souvenir. The car wasnât that far - maybe an aisle away from them. Her parents allowed her to go, but they didnât think they wouldnât see her ever again.
Emery was taken. She was a deer in headlights, but her heart not making the child second guess. Those stories on the TV were things one never thought theyâd would get themselves into, but here she was. Maybe it was her fault for not fighting back, or maybe it was the aggression from the couple who took her. Either way, it was a red flag that there was no hope in her situation.
Three years passed, and they travelled up and down the coast only to find themselves in Pennsylvania. Emery tried to struggle with the acceptance of this is how her life was now: the child of someone who couldnât have kids, so they took someone elseâs. But, she couldnât. It started out as verbal threats, but then escalated to physical outbreaks of throwing objects against the walls and punching holes in doors. Out of fear, she let the brainwashing happen. It was only easier, due to her age being so young.
The brunette now being a blonde, her next door neighbor caught her crying within her backyard garden. Emery wouldnât tell the woman why she was crying, but the woman still helped her inside the house for some tea. After the events of her 5th birthday, Emery was withdrawn and felt hopeless all the time. She would pick up the phone and call the police, but the couple engrained a fear of retaliation from them if she were to even try. They gaslighted her telling her that those âmemoriesâ were just stemmed from nightmares, that Emery suffered from delusions just like her âmother.â It was when emery was sipping the tea with her neighbor, Christine Farina, that she finally felt like she could be herself, even when the line between reality and fantasy were blurred.
Emery started to go over to farinaâs house more frequently (not just when things got ugly at her household), and the woman didnât mind. Not having have had the time to have a child of her own, she viewed emery as her own daughter. Farina was tied deeply into spirituality, to the point where she had numerous courses she taught at the local university. She bestowed her knowledge on the young girl, teaching her how to hone into her own inner strength. This brought emery peace and she didnât feel as small and hopeless as she once had.
As the years went on, the faces of her biological family faded within her mind; faces that are only seen in glimpses within her dreams. Sheâs travelled so much, she doesnât even know where she was from. Upon turning 18, not only was she an adult - but she was restless and homesick, that she took to the road without anyone knowing. Well, everyone besides Farina. Emery left a note at her door. not only thanking the woman, but telling her that she was on a mission to take back her life. Figure out who she truly was. She signed it âEmery Farinaâ.
Emery travelled around the USA, picking up odd jobs until she was able to attend and gain her 500 hours for a yoga and meditation certification. It was through her field hours that she started up a blog and went on various soul-searching and mediation retreats around the globe. To her, traveling was a form of therapy for her and writing in her blog was another outlet. She canât remember who she once was due to the mental and physical abuse of brainwashing, but she was 1000% ready to start building a new life for herself wherever her wanderlust would take her next.
Currently, Emery found herself in Stowe. It was one of those moments of showing up to the airport and buying a last minute ticket to anywhere that was cheapest. Now engulfing herself within the atmosphere and culture of the city, she is trying to save up in order to open up her own yoga studio one day.
