The scolding tree

Excavators are carving out a driveway on a piece of vacant property just down the road from us. This tree, now visible from the road, fascinates me.

It reminds me of the gnarly, ill-tempered apple tree from the movie “The Wizard of Oz” - the one that scolds Dorothy for picking its apples.

I’d like to know what kind of tree it is and whether it’s as ancient as it looks.

The orange tape suggests the tree, which is really most sincerely dead, is slated for demolition,

I went on a walk today. A very, very long walk. Long enough that at one point I thought I was going to have to just sit down and wait until my family called the Sheriff’s department to come search for me because there was no way I was going to make it back by myself. But I did, and now I am sore and exhausted but it was fun. #worthit
