Bella May Leonard

Bella May Leonard's practice celebrates embroidery as a contemporary art form.  Often using bright man made domestic materials, such as electrical wire, her sculptural work emphasises embroidery as an accessible, expressive art.  Using clear perspex to reveal and incorporate the conventionally unseen back of the stitch with the front, experimentation and layering of three-dimensional pattern is explored.  Inspired by historic textiles, her work questions and investigates ornamentation and its role in society today through embellishment of surface and space.
