Makers Dozen and Mid Conversation Addition/Reduction exhibition for Free For Arts Festival
Adam 'Monty' Renshaw
Adam ‘Monty’ Renshaw is an artsist based in the city of Manchester.
After graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University in Interactive Arts he took a role at Castlefield Gallery where he now acts as gallery technician.
This role allowed him to create TOAST, an art project that happens in Federation House.
His work his often a result of problem solving, happen-stantial is a word he uses often.
Adam’s work is often in an installation format, so it will be intriguing to see how he responds to the Makers Dozen guidelines for Great Northern Contemporary Craft Fair.
Adam Renshaw, A playful enquiry into word and objects.
Maja Piechocka
Maja is a Manchester based jeweller whose work is strongly inspired by street art, graffiti and abstract art. Photos of urban landscapes that she takes herself are always the starting point in the process of making her jewellery. In her eyes street art and graffiti doesn’t vandalize the cities but makes them colourful and intersecting as well as thought provoking.
She works predominantly with silver and brass, exploring colour through mediums such as spray paint and resin. She then uses glue and enamel lacquer to add a protective layer and enhance the shine. Applying spray paint to small scale objects is often very challenging and time consuming. These themes and techniques evoked certain new ideas that ultimately formed the basis for this collection in which every piece is bespoke and unique.
Lauren Taylor
Lauren creates contemporary jewellery inspired by simplistic, utilitarian objects, finding beauty and elegance in everyday function. Through addressing female issues, relationships are formed between these domestic objects and the modern woman.

Gianluca Mingolla
Throughout my degree I adopted an approach that combined traditional craft skills with innovative technologies, this allowed me to maintain a meticulous attention to detail and a high quality of output. This also enabled me to design and make furniture that pushes the boundaries of the handmade. Having discovered the relevance of craftsmanship making in an era where the future is digital, I have been inspired to translate these findings through a personal and individual approach to design. I have a clear future ambition to become a Designer-maker in furniture production and consider this combination between Craft and Digital will enable me to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to support me in achieving my future aspiration.

Sarah Crosby
I am an artist-maker who uses porcelain as the canvas, in which personal memories and stories are questioned through free hand illustrations. Through the fragile material and recognisable objects, the essence of the everyday matter is addressed.

Bella May Leonard
Bella May Leonard's practice celebrates embroidery as a contemporary art form. Often using bright man made domestic materials, such as electrical wire, her sculptural work emphasises embroidery as an accessible, expressive art. Using clear perspex to reveal and incorporate the conventionally unseen back of the stitch with the front, experimentation and layering of three-dimensional pattern is explored. Inspired by historic textiles, her work questions and investigates ornamentation and its role in society today through embellishment of surface and space.

Makers Dozen In Conversation
Join us this Thursday 11th of September for our In Conversation event at Manchester Craft and Design Centre 6-8pm. This is an informal Q&A session between the 6 core members of Makers Dozen and the audience where we will be discussing our experiences through the Collaborate Project as well as our individual practices.
The event is free but you will need to book a place here!
Disparate Materials Workshop
Join Makers Dozen members Joseph Hartley and Jessica Swallow for this hands-on workshop exploring the marriage of opposing and challenging materials.
Through a set brief and set targets throughout the day, and a strict “no glue allowed” rule, Joe and Jessica will present a range of challenging (and potentially clashing) materials. The workshop will be an opportunity to experiment and produce objects through unusual ways of making.
In this exciting hands-on workshop, Joe and Jess will encourage you to think laterally through making, and through experimenting with raw materials coupled with ready-made objects. Jess and Joe both use ‘disparate’ materials and ready-mades in when designing and making, so this workshop will give you a real insight into how they work.
The quality of materials often dictates their design decisions, in particular when considering how materials can be attached to other objects. Joe and Jess want to challenge your preconceptions and you’ll leave this workshop with a new perspective on craft and design.
Saturday 23rd of August at Manchester Craft and Design Centre.
Visit craftanddesign.com for ticket info.
