Not being an adult yet and not having spent your teenage years making certain experiences because you had to focus on something else makes it really hard to understand what being in love means. Sure, growing up we’ve all watched movies and seen two people meeting for the first time and falling in love, we’ve all read novels about two lovers trying to stick together no matter what happens to them, we’ve all listened to songs expressing someone’s feelings for their significant other, but what exactly happens to those people that makes their hearts flutter? Recently, Youngtaek has been often wondering about this, trying to find an answer to his existential question.
“You look so serious. Did something happen?” Y/N’s voice and a light flick on his forehead bring him back to reality.
“Huh?” Next to them, Seungmin giggles at the confused look in his eyes. “Did you just flick my forehead?”
“I’ve been snapping my fingers in your face for a minute and you seemed unconscious. You should thank me.” Y/N teases him, sticking her tongue out. Youngtaek rolls his eyes, still annoyed by the flick. “Anyway, I think I have to go now.”
“Are you running away because you’re worried about my revenge for the flick?” Youngtaek says, pinching her cheek and immediately getting slapped on the hand.
“Will you two ever stop teasing each other?” Seungmin says, sighing and mixing his americano with the drinking straw. He has known the two for a few years now, and there wasn’t a single time they had a normal conversation: one time it was their outfits, another time it was his hair, another time it was a screenshot from Youngtaek’s interview, another time it was a selfie Y/N updated to her social media... it was a never ending circle.
“Actually, I have to meet up with a senior from college.” Y/N confesses, putting her phone back into her bag. “He asked me out on a date so, you know, I accepted.”
Seungmin nods in silence, waiting for Youngtaek’s next tease about Y/N finally getting a boyfriend and leaving them alone, but the joke never comes. Youngtaek stares at Y/N with wide eyes and the drinking straw still in his mouth.
“So?” The girl says, waiting for a comment from her two best friends. “Oh, don’t tell me you’re going to let me go without saying I’m not enough clever or pretty to date him!”
Youngtaek shakes his head quickly and clears his throat. “Well, actually I was thinking of something. Why do you need to date him when you have us?”
Y/N and Seungmin exchange a confused look. “Poor Youngtaek...” Y/N sighs, drinking the last sip of her peach iced tea. “All that thinking is making him unable to understand what dating means. How could I ever date you two? You’re my best friends and, most importantly, I’m monogamous.” She gets up and greets the two boys, flicking again Youngtaek’s forehead. “You should look for a girl to date too. We can go out on double dates. Or even triple dates with Seungmin.”
Youngtaek quietly massages his forehead and watches the girl leaving in silence. Next to him, Seungmin has been quietly observing him. Y/N was right, his friend was weirder than the usual, always on his own, thinking about only-God-knows-what, but his reaction to the girl’s news was completely out of character, even for him.
“So...” he begins, after clearing his throat. “Does this mean what I think it means?”
Youngtaek blinks twice, looking at the friend with a confused look. “What?”
“You know, your reaction was not Youngtaek-ish. What does “why do you need to date him when you have us” even mean?” Seungmin replies, shaking his head.
Youngtaek bits his lip and then whispers with a low voice: “I don’t really like the idea of her dating someone.”
Seungmin looks at him and then looks in the direction where Y/N left. “So it means what I think it means.”
“What?” Youngtaek asks again, feeling uneasy.
“You have a crush on her?” The other suggests, shrugging.
“Do I?” Youngtaek asks, raising his eyebrows. Could this be the love he had been thinking about recently?
“Well, you should be the one telling me. So...?” Seungmin encourages him to reply.
“Maybe I do.” The other blurts out, pinching his lip and reflecting on it.
“Great.” Seungmin ironically says. “Shouldn’t you tell Y/N? I mean, she’s on her way to a date with another guy... it would be better to tell her in advance, you know.”
“Huh? Maybe you’re right. I’ll call her.” Youngtaek replies, taking his phone out of his pocket.
After less than a minute, Y/N picks up the phone. “Youngtaek?”
“Hey, Y/N.” The guy replies. “How are you?”
Seungmin looks at him with a confused look, while Y/N replies: “I’m... good?”
“Oh, that’s great. Listen, are you busy right now?” Youngtaek asks, while Seungmin sighs.
“I’m... going to a date... I told you earlier...?” Y/N sounds even more confused.
“Oh, that’s right.” The guy curses at himself for being so thoughtless, while thinking of something to ask Y/N, since he couldn’t just hang up like that. “So... where are you going?”
“I’m going to the café we once went together. You know, the one next to the bakery you bought the cake for Daeyeol’s birthday.” Y/N’s quietly replies, her voice still sounding confused.
“Ah, they make a really good coffee there. Well, enjoy your date!” Youngtaek says, before quickly hanging up.
“What the hell was that?” Seungmin immediately says. That conversation was completely absurd and, most importantly, he didn’t confess to Y/N, which made the call useless.
“Listen, I panicked. How the hell am I supposed to tell her I have a crush on her?!” The other asks, slapping his forehead. “What if I went to the café?”
“And tell her I like her? Something like that.” Youngtaek explains.
“What if her senior is there?” Seungmin suggests, sipping the last sip of his americano.
“Who cares? I mean, he can’t beat me up, I guess.” Youngtaek shrugs. “It’s not like I’m stealing his girlfriend.”
“Whatever.” Seungmin says, getting up. “Just don’t hold me accountable in case you end up fighting.”
“Yeah, don’t worry.” Youngtaek gets up as well. “I’ll see you at the dorm.”
He goes of out the café they were in and waits for a taxi to get him to the other one before Y/N, who was walking there, would arrive. On his way there, he begins thinking about what to tell her and all her possible replies. “Are you crazy?”, “Are you serious?”, “Oh, okay.”, “Huh?”, “Oh God.” are only some of the possible scenarios. In less than 5 minutes, the taxi stops in front of the café. Youngtaek pays, thanks the driver and quickly gets out of the car, standing in front of the building.
“Huh?” Y/N voice is far but he can clearly recognize it. The girl hurries up and walks towards him. “What are you doing here?”
All those scenarios he made up in his mind disappeared as soon as she walked there. “I... I wanted to see if you had safely arrived. Yeah.”
Y/N looks at him, rolling her eyes. “You’re weird. You must be hiding something.” Youngtaek shrugs and she turns her back. “Whatever, I’m going in.”
“Y/N, wait...” He leans on her, holding her by the wrist. “I love you! Is that what you wanted to hear?”
