[a proper proposal] "Okay." Jibeom puts both his hands on the café table in front of him, his empty coffee cup perched precariously near his elbow. "Tell me again what you asked them, exactly."

Jangjun groans. "I said, I texted 'can you please be my fake date to my annoying cousin's wedding?' just like I told you already."

"And what did they say?"

Shoulders slumping, Jangjun pouts as he scrolls through his message history with you. "'No'..."

"Okay, after that," Jibeom prods.

"Well every time I tried to explain how the plan would work," —Jangjun ignores when Jibeom rolls his eyes at the word 'plan'— "they just kept replying 'no' over and over! I mean, they could at least humour me, right? I thought we were best friends, I thought we had each other's backs—!"

"Jangjun." Jibeom raps the knuckles of his right hand against the table, snapping Jangjun's attention back to him. "The message that you called me here for, the one you're so confused over. What are the exact words?"

At the bottom of his phone screen lies your last message, which he stupidly left on read, but lost the timing to respond without it being awkward. Not that he knew what to respond with anyway.

"'Not unless you ask me properly.' Like, what's that supposed to mean?" Jangjun tosses his phone on the table and throws his hands up exasperatedly before sinking back in his chair and crossing his arms.

Sighing, Jibeom looks at his clueless friend across the table and shakes his head with a click of his tongue. "You're a real idiot sometimes, you know that?"

Jangjun glares at Jibeom over the bottom rim of his glasses. "Gee, thanks."

"Do I really have to spell it out for you?"

Raising a brow at that, Jangjun sits up straight in his chair and leans in closer. "Spell out what?"

"They want you to ask them properly, Jangjun!" Jibeom exclaims with a finger tapping pointedly down on the table. "Properly!"

"What does that mean?"

Groaning loudly, Jibeom lets his head drop to the table with a clunk. He balls both his hands into fists, takes a deep breath, and brings his head up again to glare at Jangjun, but his eyes catch on Jangjun's phone, still on and face-up on the table with your texts open.

He taps the little phone icon.

Eyes widening, Jangjun lunges for his phone, but Jibeom is quicker. He holds the phone just out of Jangjun's reach as it dials.

"What are you doing?!" Jangjun angrily whispers, his hips digging into the table edge as he struggles to catch Jibeom's arm. The paper coffee cups topple over in the chaos.

Just as his phone is centimeters within reach, your voice, quiet and far away, goes, "Jangjun?"

Jibeom smiles triumphantly and lowers his arm to give Jangjun his phone back, who sneers at him and jerks up his other hand in a threat he fully intends to follow through on.

"Jangjun?"

"Oh, hey," Jangjun answers with the world's most awkward chuckle once he brings his phone to his ear.

"Listen, if this is about the whole 'fake date' thing, I..."

Jibeom waves his hand in front of Jangjun's face and mimes a word with his mouth, pointing at the phone.

Properly

Jangjun's eyes widen.

"...seriously don't—"

"Do you want to be my real date to my annoying cousin's wedding!"

It rushes out more like a bullet than a question, and Jangjun feels himself cringe the more seconds pass with no sound coming from the other end of the line. Especially with Jibeom now sitting back in his chair with a smug grin on his face.

"And, um..." Jangjun bites the inside of his cheek. "...to other places too?"

With the stretching silence, he thinks you might've run away to a foreign country — he certainly wants to right now — but then you laugh through the phone, and it's the best thing he's ever heard.

"I thought you'd never ask."

[softer spike] “Alright,” you say, grabbing a volleyball from the bin. “All we need to do is figure out how to hold back your super strength on the court. Try this.”

You toss the ball over the net towards Jangjun, and he quickly brings his hands up to set it back to you. It goes a little far, but it still lands within bounds before bouncing to the back wall of the gym.

“Good. Do it just like that at tryouts and you should be fine.”

Jangjun smiles, getting into stance for a bump. “Throw another one!”

This time, you back up and do a real serve across the court. Jangjun bumps it back, and even though it bounces on your side, you keep the volley going and set the ball over the net. Jumping up, Jangjun brings his arm up for a spike and--

Bam.

Your jaw drops at where the volleyball made contact with the court floor. The planks are bent, the varnish cracked where the wood splits. The ball flops a few feet away, deflated.

“Jangjun!”

When you return your eyes to him, he’s smiling sheepishly with his hand scratching the back of his neck. “My bad?”

“Okay. At tryouts, whatever you do, don’t do--” You gesture at the impact point on the floor, and you swear you can smell smoke. “--that.”

Pairing: lee jangjun x reader

Summary: “At least it wasn’t like last time where you had to pick me up at customer service.”

“Are you ready to go, Jangjun?”

“Ahhh,” He dragged it out as he hopped to you with his shirt half on, one shoe untied and his hair poking up in all different directions. You raised an eyebrow and crossed your arms, watching him with amusement. He glanced up and laughed, scratching the back of his neck in embarrassment. He put up a finger and ran back into your bedroom to get ready, properly this time. He walked back to you and gave you a thumbs up. “Ready.”

You rolled your eyes and chuckled, reaching out to grab his hand. You pulled him out the door with you, looking back at him with a smile.

“Let’s go, you goof.”

When Jangjun caught up to you, he gave you a grin and squeezed your hand. He then took the lead and guided the both of you to the grocery store. This was partially due to you not having any sense of direction, so he took this as a way to take care of you.

“What’s on the list, Y/N?” He asked and let go of your hand to get a cart. He pushed it a little and jumped on it. “Y/N! Y/N! Look at me!”

“I can see you, Jangjun,” You laughed, pushing on the small space of the handle that wasn’t occupied by him while he was still on it. He happily hummed as you walked around the store, getting the things you needed. He would always let out a gasp and point at the item, making sure you never missed it. You couldn’t help, but smile at his antics.

“I’ll be right back! I want to get something, so don’t move!”

Before you could say a thing to protest, Jangjun ran off in the other direction. You sighed and checked over the list. You had gotten everything, except for milk and a few snacks for Jangjun. You glanced up at the sign to see you were in the cereal aisle and the snacks aisle was next to you. You shrugged and moved over there since it was so close. You scanned your options and grabbed a few before heading towards the dairy section. You lightly hummed, looking around to see if you could pick up anything appealing. Of course, you kept your mission as top priority.

“Hm, I should grab a drink Jangjun likes too,” You mumbled to yourself, moving about to find it. You quickly grabbed it when you found it and turned around. Only, you realized something bad and your face dropped. “Oh no. It’s happened again.”

You looked back and forth, not finding one trace of your boyfriend. You groaned, cursing at yourself for getting lost again. You tapped your finger against the cart, trying to decide what your next move would be. After standing there for a few minutes, you just shrugged and took a left.

“Maybe he’s this way.”

Twists and turns led to you being back at the dairy section. You gapped at your familiar surroundings before letting your head hang.

“No, I can’t give up!” You huffed, feeling a sense of determination flow through your body. You nodded and set off towards a random direction. Though, you still had trouble and now you were in the meat section. “Why?”

The butcher glanced up at you, raising an eyebrow. “Ah, do you need something?”

Your eyes widened and you quickly shook your head. You pushed your cart and ran away, making sure to be far away from that embarrassing moment. You bent over to regain your breath once you were far enough. Then, you started on your journey again to find your boyfriend.

“Why is it that whenever Jangjun and I go anywhere, we end up separated?” You groaned, trudging through all the aisles. You grew worried of where he may be and hoped he would find you soon. You suddenly stopped in your tracks and stood there in the candy section. “I’ll just stay here until he eventually finds me. Meanwhile, I can get some candy!”

It took a few minutes of Jangjun frantically around the store with loaves of bread and two frozen goods in his arms to finally find you. Once he spotted you, he let out a huge sigh of relief. He dropped everything and ran to you with his arms wide open.

“COME HERE, MY LITTLE BALL OF SUNSHINE. I NEED TO PROTECT YOU FROM ALL HARM.”

“Huh?” You turned towards the source and found him coming towards you. He grinned happily as he wrapped his arms around you and spun the two of you, squeezing you tightly.

You sighed, but really, you were happy to see him. “Why are you like this?”

Ignoring you, he continued his dramatic act. “I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO LOSE YOU FOREVER.”

“I would’ve found you eventually.”

“I WILL ALWAYS STAY BY YOUR SIDE, SO THAT SOMETHING THIS FRIGHTENING NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!”

You rolled your eyes and softly smiled, cupping his face into your hands. You leaned down and connected your lips to shut him up. He smiled against the kiss and gently set you down. You pulled away with happy smiles and Jangjun’s eyes were brimming with tears.

“I’m sorry to have scared you, Jangjun.”

He shook his head and smiled. “As long as I have you now, it’s okay.”

You shared one more kiss before letting go of each other. He picked up the dropped items and made his way back to you. You held hands as he pushed the cart towards the cash registers. You stared dreamily at each other while you waited in line.

“While I appreciate you searching every place for me, do you really have to be that loud and dramatic when you find me?”

“Of course I do! I’m reunited with the love of my life! How could I not be that excited?”

He giggled when he saw your mouth open in surprise and your cheeks turned a bright red. He pinched your cheek, then pulled you into his side. You grumbled into him, making him laugh.

“This time wasn’t so bad though. I mean last time, we reunited when you had to come pick me up at customer service.”

“Yeah and you pouted the whole way home. You only forgave me when I gave you kisses.”

“Well, yeah! Your kisses make everything better!”
