(The) Lesser Men's Brand New VHS-taped video
California Dreaming Revisited is the first single taken from RRR (References, Reflections: Revelations), the upcoming third album by Zagreb's own (The) Lesser Men, a long-awaited sequel to their sophomore dark-pop and roll statement Bedrooms.
California Dreaming Revisited is a prime example of taking things to another level by trying to create a song that has a radio-friendly feel to it yet being totally different. No real chord progression, no storytelling, no leading or misleading, no harmony, no abundance of anything, not least fancy words or mannerisms of any color. Just piling up, adding things on, perhaps with little tweaks here and there, glimpses of things to come, in a space that doesn't allow it. The video was directed by Ivan Ramljak, a debut of sorts, for even though an acclaimed author with a number of fantastic documentaries under his belt, this was his premiere music video. Ramljakʼs idea of VHS-taping subsequent copies of the same sequence until the man behind the wheel (Lesser Men guitarist Neven Svilar) drives himself to the oblivion of decomposition perfectly inverts the additive sound-crafting principle of the piece.
