Who had the kindness make me sick?
I've had more sick days (three days) during this internship than I expected. Maybe it's because I've been under a lot pressure and pushed my body to its limits.
Today I got a message saying that if I am sick for longer periods, she'll inform the school of my sick days or as she calls them "negleted days" which I think is a strong word. I'm not neglecting my internship, I'm absent due to illness and if she sees that I'm working elsewhere, training or am outgoing, she will end my internship immidately. Which I will fight not to be, because the longer I'm sick, the longer I can't train and train the clients the internship have given me and that's what drives me right now.
Maybe she thinks I'm faking it because she saw me yesterday and I seemed fine but I've been feeling slow, unfocused and extremely exhausted all week except yesterday. So I guess my body was signalling that something is off.
I haven't been entirely happy with my internship. I'm feel like I'm missing challanges and just doing the same thing which is writing post/articles for her blog, going to a morning meeting every second Thursday and training the clients (which I love).
It is partly my own fault that I can't find tasks to perform but since it's a one man business, she is the only one I can ask for help or talk with about tasks and she is stressed out and have three other interns which she also have to activate.
I just feel like I'm intruding and interrupting her and I don't know what tasks I can take on because she keeps to herself for a bit because she is so busy.
In my next internship I want to work with a larger business where hopefully I have someone who can help me, have time to talk to me and I can work with so I'm not just left alone behind a computer.
I'm learning that I have to be more careful of how I chose an intern place.
For future GNH students going on internships I'll share my survival tips in hopes that their internship can be more fulfilling.
Come to a clear agreement about what you expect from the internship, the host and what the host expects from you.
Talk with your host throughout your internship, if you're in doubt and feel like you're treading water, ask him/her what you can do.
Decided if you want to be in a small or big business, in a small business, the host are handling so many tasks that he/she won't have much time to help you.
Apply in time and inform your school advisor. Right before your internship, the teachers are handling the BA exams and won't have much time to sit down with you. Have your internship in place before that.
Google the business you apply to. Check out your host on LinkdIn, if it's a business with more departments, get clearification about what department you're in and google the hell out of that department or side of the business. You can never know too much.
Once again, COMMUNICATION IS KEY! I can't stress it enough. I would have wish I had more face-to-face communication as it's easier to determine what needs to be done and what the other person is actually saying.
That's it for now. Maybe I'll come up with more at the very end of the internship.
